DC Cobras U12 Girls Volleyball are the champions at Division 2 ISSFHK Girls Volleyball Tournament

The U12 girls’ volleyball team was newly formed this season and faced their first matches after just one practice. Selecting 12 players from 21 was challenging, but they quickly came together. In their opening match against last year’s ISSFHK Division 2 champions, CIS, they struggled with confidence. However, they bounced back in their next match against RCHK, securing their first victory.

Throughout the month, the team showed great improvement, winning most matches and earning the top seed in ISSFHK Division 2, which secured home court advantage for the final four. In the semifinals, they defeated the defending champions, CIS, and faced Harrow International School in a thrilling final.

In the final, after trailing 25-27 in the first set, they rallied to win the second set 26-24. In the decisive match, DC took an early lead and maintained control, becoming the ISSFHK Under 12 Girls Volleyball Champions for the DC Cobras.

A huge thank you to all DC volleyball players from U14 to U20 who assisted during the ISSFHK Finals, especially recent graduates Kaizer Banerjee and Noah Chang.

Visit from Jurassic Garage

Jurassic Garage visited our school early this week to showcase animals from around the world. The Year 1 and Year 2 children were filled with curiosity, awe, and excitement as they observed and touched the various creatures. As well as meeting a bearded dragon, we also met a hedgehog and a python. The tarantula was, perhaps, the most thrilling, giving students an up-close look at its impressive fangs!

Students had a fantastic learning experience!

DCPTA End of Year Thank You

As we wrap up this school year, the DC PTA wants to take a moment to express our gratitude to all of you for your unwavering support and dedication to the PTA, in particular our parent volunteers and parent connectors. Thanks to your help and efforts, we accomplished remarkable things this year, including the much-anticipated return of our beloved Family Fun Day after eight long years. This event was a true celebration of our community, featuring a Santa's grotto, a life-size snow globe experience, a Christmas market, and delicious food from our talented parents, in addition to all the performances from students.

Another standout event was our Gala evening, co-hosted with DBIS, themed "A Night in Old Hong Kong." It was a wonderful experience watching our students perform, enjoying a captivating martial arts sword dance, and reminiscing with a video of life in Hong Kong during the 80s. The three-course dinner and dancing to a local live band made for a truly unforgettable night.

Throughout the year, we continued our popular monthly crafts with the students and celebrated end-of-year events across the school. We also supported various school activities through sponsorship and volunteer efforts, including the primary production, book week, the careers fair, DP Art Exhibition and the personal project exhibition.

We have enjoyed giving back to our wonderful teaching and support staff throughout the year with well-being Zumba sessions, pizza and mezze snacks earlier during break times and most recently a high tea event to thank them for the fantastic work with our children.

Looking ahead, we are excited to support three significant capital projects this summer. We are sponsoring the upgrade of equipment branding in our 2nd-floor gym, which is on track for completion by mid-August. Additionally, the upgrades to the Language & Cultural Centre and the AV enhancement of the SSC are also expected to be finished before the new school year begins.

Thank you once again for your incredible support and contributions. Together, we have made this year truly special for our students and community.

Year 12 Students visit HKU and HKUST

A group of 34 Year 12 students had the valuable opportunity to visit both HKU and HKUST on Wednesday 11 June.

The Higher Education Office (HEO) organised tailor-made trips to both campuses consisting of informative presentations on admissions, faculty lectures in Business and Interdisciplinary studies and insightful campus tours led by student Ambassadors.  One of the HKUST Ambassadors was our very own DC alumnus from 2023, Hanan Patrick who was greeted with great joy and enthusiasm!  Throughout the day, students interacted with admissions staff, professors and current students, asking thoughtful questions and gaining some unique insights into university life.

For most students, this was their first experience of setting foot on a university campus and the feedback has been extremely positive so far, giving them some great goals to work towards in Year 13.

Year 10 Monologue Performance

On the evening of Wednesday 11 June, Year 10 students took to the stage for the second monologue performance of the year.

Students' talent shone on stage as they delivered their own interpretation of their chosen monologue using a wide range of physical and vocal skills whilst focusing on a naturalistic acting style. The monologues tackled a range of hard topics, and the students executed them with confidence and skill. They also made their own technical choices, including set, props, lighting, costume and sound.

A truly exceptional evening of talent, allowing parents and family to take a sneak peek into the theatre at DC.

Thank you to everyone who came to support and allowed your child to shine on stage. Special thanks go to our Theatre technician Vicky, our Year 11 Theatre Captains Natalie and Riya, our Year 10 Theatre teacher Ms Allen and all who came to support.

Academic Integrity in the age of GenAI

This week, our Year 9 and Year 10 students have successfully completed their second lesson on Academic Integrity. These sessions are a crucial part of our commitment to fostering a culture of honesty and ethical scholarship within our school community, especially in the age of Generative AI (GenAI).

This latest lesson, delved into the "Consequences of Academic Integrity Infringements".

Students learned about various "Academic Penalties" , including assessment resubmission, failing the assignment (potentially a zero or failing grade), all the way to  suspension in severe cases, especially at IB or university level. The lesson also covered "Personal Consequences" such as damaged reputation among peers and teachers, loss of trust and respect, loss of awards and scholarships, increased stress and anxiety from the fear of being caught, and a loss of self-esteem and confidence. The conclusion of this lesson circled back to the use of GenAI and reinforced that GenAI is a powerful tool requiring responsible use, with transparency and proper citation being crucial. It also emphasised the importance of asking teachers for guidance when in doubt about GenAI use.

As a final task for this lesson, students were asked to complete a quiz designed to assess their understanding of academic integrity principles, particularly concerning GenAI.

Looking Ahead and Parent Support

We encourage you to try the quiz yourself to gain insight into the concepts your children are learning and to see if you can achieve an accuracy of over 60%!

We believe that a strong partnership between home and school is vital in reinforcing these important values. We encourage open conversations at home about responsible GenAI use. We believe that by fostering these discussions and providing clear guidelines, we are preparing our students to be ethical and responsible digital citizens.
