DC Celebrates International Women's Week

Over the past week, the Service as Action and CAS Captains have led Discovery College’s International Women’s Week, creating a range of activities to celebrate and reflect on the contributions of women in our community and beyond.

During lunchtime, secondary students visited classrooms to engage primary students in writing letters to important women in their lives, designing women’s rights-themed bracelets, and taking part in interactive drawing and reflection activities.

Students were also engaged in extended Learning Team for International Women’s Day quizzes, which educated them about the history of famous women. Our Year 10 students engaged in a panel discussion with Mimi Ho, an alumnus of Discovery College and professional golfer, where she shared her experiences as an elite female athlete and the strategies she has used to enhance her performance and overcome challenges.

The week concluded with a student-led workshop for staff and a secondary debate on women’s issues, giving students the chance to share diverse perspectives about the role of emerging issues and new perspectives in women's rights activism.

Coming from the entire student leadership teams that planned and led the activities this week, we are excited to continue hosting initiatives like this that inform and inspire students to recognise, celebrate, and stand up for women in all areas of life.

Primary Students Shine at the Chinese Battle of the Books Finals held at Quarry Bay School

We are excited to share that our Year 5 and Year 6 students from the Chinese Battle of Books Reading CCA received the Excellent Award at the Primary Chinese Battle of Books Final held on Wednesday at Quarry Bay School.

This is a wonderful achievement for Discovery College. Our students demonstrated strong reading skills as they competed alongside other talented readers from across ESF schools. Their commitment, teamwork, and enthusiasm for Chinese literature were developed through Reading Club sessions throughout Term 1 and Term 2. These qualities were clearly on display during this challenging competition, and it was fantastic to see their hard work pay off.

We would also like to acknowledge the dedication and support of our Chinese Battle of Books leaders: Ms Wang, Ms  Zhao,  Shu, and Ms Rao. Their guidance, encouragement, and passion for reading have played a big part in helping our students prepare and grow in confidence.

Congratulations to our students on this fantastic result. We are very proud of them and the effort they have shown throughout the CCA and Battle of the Books competition.

From Classroom to Gallery: Visual Art in the Primary Conferences

It is with immense pleasure that our department spotlights Primary Visual Art this week. During the recent Primary Parent Conferences, Mrs. Duckett outdid herself, transforming the classroom and foyer into beautiful galleries to celebrate the work of our young artists. Our students explored with inquiry for transdisciplinary themes through a diverse range of media. Here is an overview of our tremendous work:

Natural Inspiration: Year 1 turned classrooms and shared areas into botanical wonderlands, celebrating nature with art. Throughout the unit, students explored how different iconic artists drew inspiration from the world around them. Parents were shown a variety of techniques: from the delicate, impressionistic marks of Monet and bold floral compositions of Georgia O'Keeffe to Lucy Tiffney's paint experiments on unique surfaces and the textured collage styles of Eric Carle.

The Art of Giving: Year 2 showcased 3D sculpture techniques with charming pinch pots. The students explored the universal theme of celebrations. They focused on dance, food, light, and the spirit of generosity. These vessels were designed and created with a specific purpose in mind: the intentional act of gifting them to a special person in their lives, blending clay skills with a lesson in kindness.

Collaborative Construction: Teamwork took center stage as Year 3 presented massive collaborative cardboard sculptures. Working in energetic groups of 8–10, the students designed, planned and constructed stacking masterpieces. Beyond engineering with cardboard, the true success of this project was seeing students communicate, delegate, and overcome creative challenges as a unified team.

Precision in Relief: Year 4 demonstrated impressive technical discipline with the display of relief tiles. During the exhibition, students walked parents through the complex steps of their process: rolling an even slab of clay, using templates to cut exact squares, and masterfully attaching designs. They took pride in explaining the “score, slip, stick, smooth” technique that ensured the 3D designs remained bonded.

Identity and Myth: Year 5 offered a sophisticated dual exhibition this week. In the foyer, they showcased collaborative staff portraits which utilised the grid method for accuracy and applied advanced colour mixing for realistic skin tones. Meanwhile, in the classrooms, mythical creature eye sculptures were on display alongside creative writing, demonstrating how they used sculpting to bring their characters to life.

Master Printmakers: Year 6 students displayed a high level of artistic maturity with block prints in the foyer. They guided parents through the multi-stage process of printmaking: from the initial design and the physical carving of a rubber printing block to the rhythmic process of printing multiples over several lessons. To conclude the project, students practised curation skills, carefully deciding how to adapt and elevate a specific piece from their body of work for its final professional display.

On behalf of Mrs. Duckett, the entire Art Department would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the wonderful parents who give their continual support and energy to viewing our Primary Art Showcase. Transforming our classrooms, the foyer, and the Visual Art studio into a professional gallery space was no small feat, and it simply wouldn't have been possible without you as the viewer. It was a joy to stand back and watch our students lead you through the exhibition with such confidence. Thank you for fostering an environment where our young artists feel seen, valued, and celebrated!

DC's Musician of the Year Competition

We are hosting an exciting new event called "DC's Musician of the Year". This is an opportunity for both Primary and Secondary students to celebrate their success and get involved in some healthy competition by showcasing their musical talents.

There will be two categories for each sector:

Primary Vocalist/Primary Instrumentalist and Secondary Vocalist/Secondary Instrumentalist.
A panel of judges will choose a winner of each category, plus an overall 'Musician of the Year'.
We are looking for Solo performances from any instrument/style of music.

If you want to audition to perform at the upcoming "DC's Musician of the Year", please fill out this form before Monday, 13 April and submit a performance audition video no longer than 3 minutes. This should be an excerpt of the piece you intend to play at the concert; your total performance time on the afternoon/night is a maximum of 3 minutes.

DP and Music Scholarship students do not need to provide an audition video, but you must indicate the piece you intend to play.

If you are selected to perform in "DC Musician's of the Year", you will receive an email notification with further details of the event.

The competition event will be held on Thursday 4 June Primary (1:30pm), Secondary (6pm).

DC Career Fair: A Great Success!

The gym was buzzing with energy and excitement on Wednesday as students explored a diverse range of career fields and engaged in meaningful conversations with professionals. We are hugely grateful to our DC parents, alumni and members of the local community for their generosity in sharing their time, stories and advice, giving students valuable insights that will help shape their future pathways.

A special thank you to our amazing Higher Education Ambassadors, whose energy and excellent teamwork helped the event run so smoothly.

It was a memorable day of connection, discovery and inspiration!

DC Annual Concert 2026: A Night of Musical Expression

What a spectacular evening! On Monday 9 March, our Performing Arts Theatre came alive with an extraordinary showcase of talent from our Secondary students and a selection of Primary musicians. The energy was palpable as our performers took us on a truly diverse musical journey.

The program transitioned seamlessly from the high-octane energy of rock and roll and contemporary pop to the sophisticated precision of classical compositions and ragtime. We were also treated to Indian Carnatic guitar and tabla drumming and an original composition composed by one of our year 9 students. Whether through intimate solo and duet acts, or the powerful sound of full bands, our students demonstrated immense technical skill and artistic growth. It was a proud moment for the Music Department to see such an eclectic mix of styles celebrated on one stage.

Year 12 Students participate in the ESF Marketing Competition

On Friday, 6 March two teams from Discovery College headed out to compete in the ESF Marketing Competition against other ESF schools. It was a fast-paced day that saw our students working in teams to meet tasks designed for Kowloon Motor Bus Company (KMB) and their pet-friendly bus.

The competition was split into two creative projects:
The Pet Bus Pitch: Students designed a launch event at West Kowloon Park for Hong Kong’s first-ever animal-friendly double-decker.

The 30-Second Social Media Advertisement: Teams produced a catchy video advert for the KMB Tourist Day Pass, mapping out a full day’s itinerary across the city.

Our students really brought their best entrepreneurial selves, delivering pitches that were both professional and memorably creative. While they didn't walk away with the "Best Team" trophy this time, their ability to link classroom concepts to real-world scenarios was impressive. They spoke with confidence and showcased some truly memorable ideas that gave the other schools a run for their money.

Well done to everyone involved for representing DC so well!
