PYP Exhibition

In the final year of each of the IB programmes, the students undertake a special project to demonstrate their understanding of all of the components of that programme. The PYP Exhibition is the culminating project of the Primary Years Programme (PYP). The Exhibition is an extended unit of inquiry that is completely student-driven. The students consider many issues in the world and settle upon one they would like to learn more about. They research into that topic and then, empowered with new found knowledge, decide upon ways of taking action in order to make a difference in the world. It is hoped that this action becomes sustainable and not just something that happens during the Exhibition process. As well as action, students demonstrate each of the Learner Profile attributes as well as the Approaches to Learning skills.

This week saw the Year 6 students present their showcases to parents and DC students. During the Exhibition showcase, the students talked about their learning from throughout the unit. The focus of the showcase was on the students explaining the process they undertook in deciding upon the topic of interest, writing questions to guide their learning, researching through interviewing experts in the field of their research, through online sources (including AI), through books and other sources of information.

Each group then explained the action they took and how the impact they hoped they made.

We are all extremely proud of all the students. It gives us all great confidence in knowing that the future world is in the hands of such deep thinkers and very caring human beings.

MYP Personal Project Exhibition

On 19 May, we proudly hosted the MYP Personal Project Exhibition, a special event that highlighted the achievements of our Year 11 students as they transition into the Diploma Programme (DP). This milestone exhibition showcased their independent, research-based projects, demonstrating their interests and creativity with confidence.

Throughout the personal project process, students encountered various challenges, with time management emerging as a common theme. However, they actively learned and practiced essential approaches to learning skills—including communication, research, thinking, and self-management—while also developing resilience and perseverance through trial and error.

The exhibition left attendees inspired, with many recognising the interactive and engaging presentations. It was clear that the students had put effort, thought, and enthusiasm into their projects, which reflected the diversity of their talents and interests. The event not only celebrated their achievements but also motivated participants, leaving them filled with new ideas.

Yearbook Orders

We are excited to announce that the Yearbook for 2024-25 is in the works!

The Yearbook is a hard-bound book of approximately 200 pages which contains each class photo as well as highlights from numerous events throughout the year, including Cobra sports teams, House competitions, music performances, drama productions, camps, trips, and many other College activities. It is a wonderful way to remember the year.

Details on how to place your orders will be shared soon. Orders will open next week, and the order form (available in the Reply Slip on the Ding App) must be completed by 2 June 2025.

Please note that payments will be processed through the ESF payment system; cash and cheques will not be accepted. Yearbook payment is non-refundable. To help reduce waste and our carbon footprint, the College will print Yearbooks based on the number of orders received by the deadline. Unfortunately, late orders cannot be accommodated.

Yearbooks will be distributed to students during the last week of school in June.

DC hosts Battle of the Books Competition

Battle of the Books is an exciting team competition that requires students to read and explore a selection of 20 fantastic books. On 22 May, Discovery College hosted the semi-finals of Battle of the Books. The event brought together students from Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School, ELCHK Lutheran Academy, and Harrow International School, creating a fun atmosphere filled with enthusiasm for reading.

The DC team consists of Year 8 students: Sana Ikeda, Isbal Lam, Erin Mo, Eve Hui, and Year 7 students: Cadence Law, Adhvika Gupta, Sophia Cheung, Chloe Jiang, Ellie Hui, and Celestine Choy.

Here’s the reflection from Year 8s.

"Battle of the Books is a great opportunity to showcase your knowledge and enhance your collaboration skills. This year, our team collaborated well, knew all our authors and tried our best."

Many thanks to Ms Garnett for moderating all the rounds at the competition.

DC Alumnus gains acceptance to the Hong Kong Bar Association

Grow Discover Dream indeed!

After a long journey, both geographically and educationally, DC’s very own Cherie Ho has finally reached her long-term goal of becoming a barrister in Hong Kong.

Known to many students and teachers from her time at DC, but also to the many students she has helped over the years as one of our annual visiting alumni who offer support as advisors for students considering specific pathways for university, Cherie was admitted to the Hong Bar Association last week.

From her early days at DC to her graduation from the diploma programme in 2018, from her undergraduate degree at Cambridge University to her Professional Certificate in Law (PCLL) programme at Hong Kong University, from her Postgraduate Master’s Degree back at Cambridge University to her Barristers Qualification Examinations back in Hong Kong, and, finally, from her three demanding pupillages to her acceptance to the Hong Kong Bar Association, she has evidenced all of the qualities - and perhaps more – that we work hard to engender in our DC students. Particularly perseverance and commitment, but also – surprising perhaps in a person who achieved so much in her time at DC and has achieved so much in the seven years since her graduation from here - an ever-present and admirable humility.

We wish her a long and successful career!

Inter House Senior Boys Football

The Inter-house Senior Boys Football tournament was an exhilarating 4-day long tournament, which brought together students from Years 10-12 each lunchtime last week as organisers, athletes and cheerleaders.

The competition was fierce, showcasing remarkable talent and teamwork from all Houses. In a spectacular final matchday, the Yellow House boys emerged victorious with a decisive 3-1 win against the Blue House followed by a close tie in the third place final where Green House clinched a 1-0 victory over Red House.

Congratulations to the players for their hard work and sportsmanship, making this event a memorable celebration of our House identity and school spirit.

Introduction to MYP Year 7 Transition Programme

We are excited to introduce the MYP Year 7 transition programme on Friday, 30 May —a unique opportunity for our students to experience a taste of the Middle Years Programme (MYP). This brief but impactful programme allows students to engage with selected subjects, providing them with a glimpse into what the MYP is all about. We kindly ask all Y6 parents to come to the Theatre for the Parent Information Session (8:30am start and it will finish by 9:30am, where there will be some light refreshments available).

What to Expect

During this transition day, students will have the chance to experience engaging activities in Design, Sciences, and the Arts through hands-on experiences that emphasise collaboration and critical thinking.

Exploring Music Composition: Students will learn about composition and how to use the building blocks of music to communicate characterisation, emotions, and themes of time and place. They will also develop critical listening skills to draw their own conclusions about what the music is conveying.

Engaging in Design: In a fun and interactive "Hat Mania" project, students will work in teams to design and prototype hats tailored to specific user needs. This activity fosters teamwork and introduces essential design thinking skills.

Investigating in Individuals and Societies: Students will learn some basic skills of source analysis and triangulation. They will also get to practice identifying key information in a text,  laying the foundational skills needed for success in the MYP Individuals and Societies course.

Experimenting in Science: Students will learn how changing the independent variable (the combination of Alka-Seltzer and water) affects the dependent variable (the distance the rocket travels).

Why this is Important

The MYP Year 7 transition programme is an important introduction to the MYP, providing students with a snapshot of the dynamic learning environment they can expect in the coming year. This experience is designed to build their excitement and develop a sense of curiosity about the MYP.

We encourage parents to discuss these upcoming activities with their children, instilling a sense of enthusiasm about the transition to the MYP.

We are also looking forward to meeting parents on 30 May for a brief introduction to the MYP. During this time, parents will have the opportunity to learn more about the MYP, while students participate in the transition programme. We encourage parents to join us for this informative session to better understand the exciting journey your children are about to embark on.
