Message from the Principal: Campus Update

As we’ve said in our communications throughout this week, thank you for your support and the effort you have made in keeping students connected through four days of online learning.

While we know everyone would prefer to be in school, we had to close our campus to all except for critical staff to ensure the repair work could be safely completed.

We have now removed a number of deflated pillows from the front of the roof area. Work will continue over the weekend to reinforce areas near the damage. As you can see, from the image below, this involves heavy machinery and cordoned-off spaces.

As this work wraps up, we will have a site visit from a structural engineer who will check other areas of the roof and sign off on our safe reopening. Assuming the checks all result in positive outcomes, we look forward to opening our doors again on Monday.

Thank you to the parents who have reached out with questions about whether we will adjust our calendar for the upcoming CPD days. We know many of you have scheduled family travel plans around our published calendar, and unfortunately, we are too close to the dates to be able to make changes to the scheduled programmes for the two October CPD days. However, you have likely seen the message from ESF CEO, Belinda Greer, which shares that discussions are taking place across ESF about whether any changes might be reasonably made to the calendar later in the academic year. We will, of course, update you as soon as possible if any decisions are made.

We hope that everyone has a restful weekend and that you are able to enjoy some sunny weather for a change! We look forward to welcoming you back into school on Monday.

University Fair 2025

We were delighted to host over 130 esteemed Higher Education institutions from across the globe at our University Fair on Monday. Students from DC, as well as neighboring schools DBIS and YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College, seized the valuable opportunity to explore their future options and engage with representatives from a diverse range of institutions from Cambridge Melbourne, and most places in between. The feedback from university representatives was that our students, from Years 10 to 13, are ambitious and enthusiastic in finding out about the next steps in their educational journey.

A special thank you goes out to our exceptional Higher Eduction Students Ambassadors whose efforts ensured a seamless and successful event and who were another shining example of student leadership in action on the campus.

Student-Led VoiceDC

On 17 September, the DC Theatre was buzzing with incredible talent during our lunchtime production of VOICEDC.

Led by our brilliant Student VOICEDC team: Brianna, Kaylee, Alisia, Stephanie, William, and Jenna, and inspired by 'The Voice', this event showcased our amazing student musicians, singers, and talents in DC.

From the powerful performances to the electric atmosphere, the event was a resounding success! The team is immensely grateful to the dedicated crew of Mr. Davis, Ms. Wong, and Mr. Tadeo, for their masterful work on lights and sound, and to their supervisor, Ms. Garnett, for her unwavering support.

A special thank you to all the performers and to everyone who showed up to support and cheer. We are grateful for your support.

Finding Order in the Weave

What can our hands create when our mobile phones are put away? Recently, a number of our Secondary students found the answer in beautifully crafted bamboo bookmarks. During their Learning Team sessions, or after finishing class assessments early, students have been weaving thin, pliable strips of bamboo together. Through this focused, hands-on activity, they have discovered a unique sense of beauty and calm that comes from order.

This creative experience resonates strongly with our recent days of online learning from home due to the typhoon. When screens became our main window to the world, it was a reminder of how important it is to weave a clear sense of routine into our daily lives. Hopefully, this small bookmark can serve as an inspiration: whether online or offline, we can find inner peace and growth by thoughtfully creating rhythm and order in our lives.

Exploring PYP: Recap of the Parent Workshop

Thank you to the parents who were able to attend the Introduction to PYP Workshop on 17 September. It was an engaging workshop, aimed at providing parents with a deeper understanding of our student-centred, inquiry-based curriculum. During the session, we explored how our dedicated teachers plan transdisciplinary units of inquiry that foster conceptual understanding across various subjects. Attendees learned about the key elements of the PYP framework, including knowledge, skills, concepts, action and the learner profile attributes that guide our students' growth.

Our central idea for the session, "PYP is a student-centred approach to education that offers an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary curriculum framework that builds conceptual understanding," underscores our commitment to empowering students to become active, engaged learners. Through our lines of inquiry, we examined the elements of the PYP and how they work together to support new learning and deeper understandings.

Thank you to everyone who participated; we appreciate your involvement in supporting our children’s educational journeys.
