DC Musicians Shine at the ESF Music Festival

On Tuesday, 23 September, Tsuen Wan Town Hall played host to one of the most spectacular musical highlights of the academic year: the ESF Secondary Music Festival. Bringing together the finest young musicians from across the English Schools Foundation network, the evening was a breathtaking celebration of music with Discovery College proudly represented on stage.

An event of this scale is a testament to the immense dedication of the performers and staff members involved. Leading up to the big night, our students and staff committed to five intensive rehearsal sessions alongside their peers from fellow ESF secondary schools. Learning complex repertoire and adapting to new ensemble dynamics in such a short window required remarkable discipline and teamwork.

The audience at Tsuen Wan Town Hall was treated to a programme showcasing an impressive variety of musical ensembles. The evening moved effortlessly from the sweeping melodies of the String Sinfonia and the full Symphony Orchestra to the bold, resonant brass, woodwind and percussion of the Concert Band, the high-energy swing of the Big Band, and the uplifting harmonies of the combined Choirs. The grand finale was a true spectacle, bringing every student onto the stage together for a thrilling joint performance that brought the audience to its feet.

We are incredibly proud of our DC musicians for their passion, stamina, and exceptional performance standard throughout this journey. Beyond the music, seeing students build connections with fellow musicians from across Hong Kong was inspiring. A heartfelt thank you to the organisers, music teachers, and parents whose support made this unforgettable event possible!

Primary Inter House Swimming Gala 2026

This week, all students in Years 4, 5 and 6 represented their House in a series of six swimming galas.  It was a great opportunity for our students to celebrate their progress after engaging in swimming lessons for the last six weeks as part of our PE curriculum.

All children were able to cheer on their friends and teammates, demonstrate their swimming strokes, race one another and work collaboratively in a variety of individual and team relay races.  This was a terrific occasion to celebrate the progress that every individual has made with their technical swimming, as well as the grit and perseverance that drives this. Moreover, as with every House event, it is a great opportunity to cheer on our peers and celebrate each other's success.

It was wonderful to welcome so many parents, friends and families to the pool side to cheer on our awesome swimmers - thank you for joining us, and to our brilliant PE team and teachers for making this possible.

RUN Resources Drive

Our Year 4 learners are coming to the end of their inquiries into migration and have deepened their understanding of the risks, challenges, changes, and opportunities that can arise for people when they migrate.

As part of their learning through this 'Where We Are in Place and Time' unit, students enjoyed an engaging presentation by a Year 12 DC student who volunteers with the RUN Foundation in Hong Kong. This charity supports refugees in Hong Kong (more information is available HERE). During our classroom discussions and through further research, the children demonstrated a keenness to support refugees and their families who are connected to RUN by taking a variety of student-driven actions.

One of these action ideas is to hold a ‘household resource drive’ next week. Year 4 students will have collection boxes ready in the foyer and primary shared areas all of next week, to collect basic necessities that help keep refugee families healthy. Examples of needed resources include nutritious pantry staples such as rice, pasta, beans, lentils, cooking oil, UHT milk, and canned food; hygiene items such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and toilet paper; dish and laundry detergents; and diapers and wet wipes.

Thank you in advance for any donations you are able to contribute to this resource drive. Our Year 4 community, and the beneficiaries of these products, will be most grateful.

Building Community Through Culture: Secondary Student Leaders Mentor Primary Peers for Diwali

As excitement builds for our upcoming Diwali celebrations, our secondary student leaders are stepping up to support primary students during their dance rehearsals.

Working with Ms Nebel and Ms Alflatt, they are choreographing routines, breaking down complex steps, and offering encouragement. In doing so, our older students are turning their passion for dance into meaningful mentorship.

This cross-year collaboration not only helps our primary performers build confidence and cultural connection on stage, but it also allows our secondary students to sharpen vital leadership skills like communication, patience, and adaptability—a fantastic testament to the supportive, interconnected community we cultivate at Discovery College.

Year 10 & 11 Classes Bring Music to Life at Lunchtime

The Discovery College foyer was transformed into a vibrant concert venue this week as our Year 10 and Year 11 Music students took to the stage for a series of memorable performances adding a great atmosphere to lunchtime and the school day.

Our Year 10 musicians have been exploring the structural clarity and balance of the Classical Style, while our Year 11 students have been learning about Romantic and 20th-century Orchestration directly into practice. However they have also been practicing in bands as part of a parallel music performance unit in between their composition study.

What made the sets so engaging was the incredible diversity of music on display. Audiences were treated to a rich mix of styles such as Rock tracks, Pop melodies, Jazz standards, and the relaxed grooves of Reggae and Rocksteady.

Huge congratulations to all of our Year 10 and Year 11 performers for their professionalism, enthusiasm, and courage on stage. Thank you as well to everyone in the DC community who came down to listen, cheer, and support our musicians—you helped make these performances truly special. We are already looking forward to our next live music showcase!
