MYP Personal Project Exhibition: Beyond the Shelves

Yesterday, our theatre at Discovery College was filled with stories and excitement as we presented our MYP Year 11 Personal Project Exhibition. Ninety-five students from the Class of 2028 showcased their work to the school community under this year’s theme, Beyond the Shelves.

What is the MYP Personal Project?

The Personal Project is the capstone of the IB Middle Years Programme, a year-long, fully independent project in which each student chooses something they genuinely care about, sets their own goals, and sees it through from the first idea to a finished product. There are no prescribed topics, no shared briefs. Each project belongs entirely to them.

What We Saw

Walking through six genre-inspired zones, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Adventure, Romance, Dystopian, and Historical, visitors encountered the full range of what our students are curious about.

One student, driven by a love of music and a desire to process his own story, composed an original rap song reflecting on his personal journey, a deeply honest piece of writing that became both his research and his product. Another student designed a multi-platform awareness campaign to introduce basic American Sign Language (ASL) to the school community, producing posters and guides that could genuinely be used long after the exhibition ended. And in Zone 6, a student built a physical scale timeline tracing the evolution of Hong Kong’s iconic skyscrapers across the decades, a beautifully crafted model that tied history, architecture, and local identity into one display.

What made the exhibition so special wasn’t any single project. It was watching students stand next to their work and explain it confidently, proudly, and entirely in their own words.

Skills That Will Stay With Them

Across all 95 projects, what students developed went far beyond their chosen topics. They practised self-management over a full academic year, built research habits that pushed past the surface, sharpened their communication skills in front of a real audience, and above all, discovered what it feels like to finish something they chose entirely for themselves.

Those are thinking skills and habits that carry forward into the Diploma Programme, into university applications, and into whatever comes after.

A huge congratulations to every student in CO ’28. You showed us not just what you made, but how you think.

Student Leadership Team

A special thank you to our student leadership team, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this exhibition a success.

Student Leadership Positions

We have opened applications for students currently in Years 7-11 to apply for student leadership positions for the next academic year.

Specifically, there are opportunities to become members of the Student Council or to represent  peers as House Captains.

Full details of these exciting roles, including the responsibilities and application process, are available on our Student Leadership Website, which has been designed by our Student Council.

Student Leadership is central to ensuring our student body has a voice in shaping their experiences throughout the college. Further leadership roles, including those for Primary students will be shared in due course.

PTA Secondary Chess Tournament

We’re excited to share that our ongoing chess tournament for secondary students is in full swing —made possible through the generous support of our PTA and the inspiring student leadership of Mahirr (Year 12).

The tournament has already seen an incredible start, with 82 secondary students signing up to take part. That’s a fantastic turnout and a true reflection of the skill, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship our students bring to every challenge.

Games have been taking place throughout the week, and it’s been wonderful to see students battling it out with focus and determination, while also supporting one another—what community and competition should look like.

We now look forward to the next stage: the final round of 16, starting Monday. With the tournament entering this exciting phase, we’re expecting even tighter matches, brilliant strategy, and plenty of memorable moments.

Good luck to all students involved—may your planning be clever, your moves confident, and your games inspiring!

Student Withdrawal - Deadline: 30 April (today)

A friendly reminder that Today is the deadline to notify the College if a student will not be returning in August 2026.

Parents who wish to withdraw their child from Discovery College are required to submit a Student Withdrawal Form via the ESF App (tap the Ding! icon in the app and scroll down to "Forms"). This online form is the only official method for notification.

Deposit & Fees - Upon entry, all DC students paid a two-month deposit. The first half was applied to the first month’s fees; the remaining half is credited against the final month of enrollment, provided a two-month advance notice is given. To apply this credit to June 2026 (the end of the current academic year), notice must be received by 30 April 2026. Please note that subsequent changes to the final attendance date or cancellations of withdrawal may be declined.

Account Balances - Please ensure all outstanding balances are settled. The ESF Billing team can only apply the deposit credit once all other invoices are paid. To check your balance, go to the ESF App/Ding and tap on ‘ePayment account transaction/balance’. For ePayment questions, please contact e-payment@dc.edu.hk.

Current Year 13 students graduating at the end of the current 2025-26 academic year,  do not have to submit the Student Withdrawal form.
