Excitement crackled through our Secondary community on Monday at our much-anticipated Secondary Sportsday. Hosted at the vibrant Kwai Chung Sports Ground, the event showcased not only the athletic prowess of our students but also the incredible House Spirit that binds our community together.

Highlights included:

• Record-Breaking Performances: There were incredible times posted in the 100m, 400m, 1500m and 4x100m relay, and huge distances and heights achieved in our field throwing and jumping events, demonstrating the exceptional talent and hard work of our students.
• Team Spirit: Whilst fiercely competitive, this was ultimately about House Spirit and community, and we were proud of the outstanding sportsmanship and teamwork on display
• Proud Moments: Many students completed events despite facing personal challenges—each story adding to the day's warmth and encouragement.

Athletics Day is not just about competition; it’s also an opportunity to build community. Parents, teachers, and staff came out in full support, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with cheers, smiles, and unyielding encouragement.

On 28 Jan, the Music Department hosted our annual Recital Evening. It was a truly remarkable showcase of the talent and dedication that defines the music culture we have here at Discovery College.

From the first note to the final applause, the audience was captivated. Our performers ranged from year 1 to year 13 students, and we were treated to a range of music, including European art music and traditional instruments like the Tabla drums and the Guzheng. 

The concert was also an important moment for our Year 13 students, as this Recital Evening marked their final Recital Evening at Discovery College. Mark, Adrian, and Donna, despite all the IB Diploma workload came on stage and performed brilliantly.  

Our next major event will be The Annual Concert taking place on 9 March 2026. Secondary musicians interested in auditioning, PLEASE COMPLETE THIS AUDITION FORM. This will be another great event not to be missed, and all of the school community is welcome.

The Mockingjay Awards brought Year 9 students together to showcase their short film adaptations of scenes from The Hunger Games, highlighting their newly learned filmmaking skills in categories such as Best Actor, Best Film, and Best Cinematography.

Hosted with energy and flair by Mr Jobling, the event celebrated not only technical artistry and performance but also the spirit of collaboration. While groups faced disagreements along the way, they ultimately demonstrated cooperation, creativity, and resilience. More than a competition, the awards marked a celebration of growth, storytelling, and the joy of working together toward a shared vision.

A Week of Engaged, Purposeful Learning

This past week, our students were deeply engaged in authentic interdisciplinary learning experiences. Working collaboratively in groups, students identified specific issues and problems that required them to draw upon knowledge from multiple subject areas. Through this process, they practiced essential skills in collaboration, communication, and research as they developed product prototypes to demonstrate their understanding. What made this experience particularly meaningful was the agency students had in selecting their own products and approaches, allowing them to showcase their learning in ways that were personally relevant and engaging.

Why Interdisciplinary Learning Matters in the MYP

Interdisciplinary learning is a core element of the Middle Years Programme, and for good reason. This approach assesses how effectively students can evaluate their subject-specific knowledge and combine insights from two or more disciplines to address complex issues. Throughout the week, students were challenged not only to consider how a problem can be addressed using a single discipline, but also to combine two or more disciplines and evaluate the resulting strengths and limitations. Most importantly, this provided a rare and rigorous opportunity for our students to practice synthesis in their subject learning, a skill that will serve them well throughout their academic careers and beyond.

Assessment, Reflection, and Next Steps

The IDU Week concluded with a reflective learning phase, allowing students to solidify their understanding and consider how they approached the interdisciplinary challenge. This project-based learning experience encourages students to consider multiple (two or more) areas of discipline, knowledge, and skills to solve problems or discuss issues. Through this approach, students engage in a design thinking process that develops empathy, fosters creative problem-solving, and strengthens collaboration skills. These experiences naturally connect to the MYP interdisciplinary assessment criteria, as students learn to synthesize knowledge from multiple disciplines while working together to address real-world challenges.

Our Year 11 students are to prepare for their Volunteer Educational Placement (VEP) scheduled for June 15-18, 2026. We are seeking your support in providing placements for our students in Hong Kong to help them gain valuable real-world work experience.

This placement is a crucial part of our students' preparation for entering the workforce. It will follow a series of sessions designed to help them make informed choices about their future careers. This partnership between the College and the community is essential in developing effective future employees.

The goal of this week is to immerse students in a professional work environment, where they can learn about the routines and responsibilities of an adult workplace. Students are expected to adhere to typical employee standards, including working hours, dress code, and general workplace expectations. The more they are involved in meaningful tasks relevant to their intended career fields, the more beneficial the placement will be. Our students have previously engaged in a variety of roles, including positions in animation studios, aviation, and gourmet chocolatiers. Placements in Law, Finance, Medicine, and Design are especially popular.

While we do not dictate the specific tasks, we ask that students are fully engaged for 6-8 hours each day, with clearly defined responsibilities and appropriate adult supervision. It is also beneficial if the tasks offer a level of challenge and variety. Students should not be assigned tasks requiring specialized training or qualifications, or those involving hazardous conditions or materials.

We encourage you to discuss potential work placements with your child. Whenever possible, students are encouraged to seek out their own placements. In the lead up to the experience, we will guide them in developing skills such as resume writing, application crafting, and interview techniques.

We are pleased to announce that applications for internal scholarships are now open and will remain in effect until 2 March 2026, 9:00am. You can access the form here.

A limited number of scholarships are available for exceptional secondary students (Year 10 onwards) who demonstrate excellence in academics, community engagement, sport, music, drama, visual arts, and design.

Our scholarship program is designed to recognise and support outstanding talent, providing opportunities for students to unlock their full potential.

A few guidelines to note while applying for Scholarships:

• Open to students entering Years 10 - 13 in Aug 2026
• Only one application per student
• Students who receive a scholarship are expected to remain at DC until graduation
• Students must submit their application before the deadline of 2 March at 9:00am and no late submissions will be considered.

Want to have fun learning to play a range of ROCK AND POP SONGS ON A RANGE OF INSTRUMENTS and build all-round musicianship?

We are offering a paid music program called YRock 101 at Discovery College. Students involved will work with highly experienced and outstanding music tutors and gain experience learning to play rock and pop songs on GUITAR, KEYS, BASS GUITAR, DRUMS AND VOCALS. 

Cost: $315 per student per session

When: Mondays 4:45-5:45 pm running for 6 weeks STARTING 2 February 2026

Where: Secondary Music Room LD1 on the lower ground floor

The program will culminate in a performance celebration with other international schools on 21 March 2026.

Year 2 had a very exciting trip to the Science Museum last Wednesday, 21 Jan. The children explored how forces are all around us and got to see pushes, pulls, friction, and simple machines in action through lots of hands‑on activities. They were curious, asked great questions, and really enjoyed trying out the different exhibits.

Thank you to all the parents who volunteered and came along on the day. Your help meant the trip was well‑organised, and lots of fun, and it made a big difference to the children’s experience and growing interest in science.

Semester 1 reports for Years 7-13 will be published, via the ESF App, on Monday 9 February at 9.00am. This report contains grades based on work that has been completed during Semester 1, i.e. from 13 August 2025 to 16 January 2026. For each subject, there will be a course outline detailing work covered, subject criteria grades and an overall achievement grade. A grade will also be given for DP CAS or CP Service Learning in Years 12-13.

• The MYP Assessment Guidance Handbook 2025-26 contains important information on how achievement grades are determined for each subject in the MYP. 

-  For Semester Reports, teachers analyse summative assessment grades based on subject-specific criteria and use 'best-fit' approach to award levels of achievement.

 -  A "best-fit" approach means teachers consider all available evidence and use their professional judgement to determine the IB published descriptor that best describes a student's performance and award a final MYP 1-7 grade.

 - For Semester report cards, most subjects can and should use multiple summative assessments for EACH of the four criteria, with various formative assessments helping inform “best fit”.

MYP Secondary Awards 

At the end of the academic year, to recognise student achievement in different aspects of learning and education and to align with the DC outcomes and vision, students may be awarded for a variety of achievements including Academic Excellence. 

Students in Years 7-11 who achieve 51 or more points out of 8 subjects (maximum 56 points) on the MYP final 1-7 grade scale will receive Academic Achievement Awards at the end of the academic year. The award recognizes their outstanding academic achievement across all eight subject groups during the academic school year.  To be eligible for an academic award, students must achieve a minimum of 51 points in both semesters. Please note that the points will not be averaged across semesters. For students admitted in January, only Semester 2 grades will be used. To calculate the points total for Semester 2 in Y7 to Y9, the highest Arts and Design grade will be used in the Semester calculation.
