Congratulations to our Class of 2025

Wednesday evening marked a special milestone for our Year 13 students and their families, as they crossed the stage at our Graduation Ceremony.

We are incredibly proud of all 81 students in our class of 2025, and the journey that each has taken to get to this moment. The evening provided us with an opportunity to celebrate each student, and those who have supported them along the way. Special mentions were made to the Learning Team of Steve Bolton, Akina Lam, Line Turagaivu, Matt Davies and Holy Yeung, who have provided a foundation of support for the cohort, led by their dedicated Dean, Vanessa Virret.

The audience were treated to some incredible performances from gifted musicians within the cohort, and speeches from students and leaders, which provoked laughter and a few tears from those in attendance. A particular highlight came with the closing remarks from our Principal, Mr Smith, who brought the house down with a performance that needs to be seen to be believed: Watch video here.

Such an event is not possible without a skilled and committed team. Of note, we wish to acknowledge those who worked behind the scenes to ensure a wonderful event:

  • The Communications Team: Devi and Rachel
  • The Facilities Team led by Brian and Candice
  • The APC Team led by Benny
  • Claudia, Leanne and Lydia for ensuring perfect gowns donned our graduates
  • Sound and Lighting Team; Vicky, Joseph, Matt
  • ICT Team, Stephen and Charles
  • Our Director of Curriculum, Kellie Berry, who managed the event

Transition Day at Discovery College: A New Beginning for Year 1 and Year 7 Students

We are delighted to have welcomed our 2025-26 Year 1 and Year 7 cohorts onto campus today, marking the beginning of the next stage of educational journeys with us.

Our incoming Year 1 students enjoyed structured play activities. This approach not only provided a fun introduction to the school environment but also fostered social connections among the children. Parents and carers were invited to join in, getting a firsthand look at how we facilitate learning through play. It was heartwarming to see families engaging with the various stations, bonding over shared experiences and learning about the resources available to their children.

In the coming weeks, we have more transition events planned to ensure that our new Year 1 students and families feel confident and excited about starting school.

Meanwhile, our soon-to-be Year 7 students dove into a series of engaging Middle Years Programme (MYP) lessons. The day was packed with collaborative activities that encourage teamwork and creativity. Highlights included:

  • Exploding Rockets in the Science Lab: Students worked together to create their own rockets, exploring the principles of chemical reactions
  • Making Music in the Music Studio: This session allowed students to express their creativity and discover the joy of collaboration through music.
  • Solving a Mystery in I&S Classrooms: A thrilling challenge that required critical thinking and teamwork, making history and social studies come alive.
  • Engaging in Design: In a fun and interactive "Hat Mania" project, students worked in teams to design and prototype hats tailored to specific user needs. This activity fostered teamwork and introduced essential design thinking skills.

These activities not only introduced students to key subjects but also helped them build meaningful relationships with both peers and teachers.

We look forward to seeing our Year 1 and Year 7 students grow and flourish in the coming months and are delighted to welcome our new families to our community.

DCPTA Gala Night

Last Friday, DCPTA  and DBIS PTSA hosted a fabulous evening at the Auberge Hotel. The theme, "A Night in Old Hong Kong," was beautifully embraced by everyone. The evening began with a wonderful musical performance by one of our students, followed by an impressive dragon dance from DBIS students and a captivating martial arts showcase.

The PTA Gala night was truly memorable featuring sumptuous food, a lively band and a vibrant crowd of attendees.

A heartfelt thank you to the PTA committees for organising a fabulous event that brought our parent and teacher community together!

Year 3 Celebration of Learning

On Thursday, our Year 3 students proudly hosted a wonderful Celebration of Learning, inviting their families to experience firsthand their journey through the How We Express Ourselves unit of inquiry. It was a wonderful afternoon showcasing the students' creative talents and efforts!

The celebration kicked off with a fabulous Chinese Poetry performance in the theatre, skillfully led by our Primary Chinese Team.

Following this, students guided their families through a  Year 3 Gallery, which featured a collection of their chosen artwork and poetry. The creative journey continued in the Foyer, where beautiful pieces from their Art lessons with Mrs. Duckett were displayed.

In their classrooms, students shared digital portfolios of their nature photography and transient art, demonstrating their developing technology skills. The afternoon was also filled with interactive collaborative creative zones, where families and students alike enjoyed exploring watercolor, sketching, transient art, and paper craft.

The Year 3 Teachers couldn't be prouder of the confidence, creativity, and communication skills our students demonstrated throughout this special celebration. Well done, Year 3!

Agency in Action Learning Expo

We are excited to share the learning experiences taking place in our Agency in Action Class during Discovery time! Students are given the opportunity to select one of three pathways to enhance their skills and explore their interests:

  • Passion Project: Explore What You Love!

    • Students pursue personal interests such as fashion design, DIY crafts, and technology.

    • Focus on joy and curiosity while gaining valuable knowledge.

  • Young Entrepreneurs: Building Business Adventures

    • Students turn their ideas into business ventures.

    • Learn about business planning, marketing strategies, and financial management.

  • Skill Builders: Mastering New Abilities

    • Focus on intentionally developing specific skills like coding, art, and singing.

    • Set clear goals, practice deliberately, and track progress.

Over the course of the academic year, students have approximately 20-22 hours during Discovery time to complete their projects in teams. We are proud to showcase 64 self-directed learning projects and 33 entrepreneurial ventures.

Additionally, our students have opportunities to participate in service learning projects. We have selected 27 projects to showcase their learning and share the impact they have made in the community. These projects are connected to the Sustainable Development Goals and introduce students to real-world challenges, helping them understand how their contributions can lead to positive change.

On 19 June, we will be hosting an Agency in Action Learning Expo event to showcase these projects. Students will present their work and engage in workshops and presentations. Families are warmly invited to celebrate our students' creativity and achievements.

Mark your calendars for 19 June. Please stay tuned for more details coming soon!

Year 13 Pre-Departure Celebration

Following their graduation rehearsal, the class of 2025 attended a pre-departure celebration in the theatre organised by the HEO.  This is always one of the highlights of the year when a large group of DC alumni take part in a panel discussion, sharing their university and life experiences and offering some wise, practical and encouraging advice to our graduates as they enter a new and exciting life chapter.

Topics ranged from issues  such  as visas, insurance and finance to cultural adjustment, making friends, to internships and finding work.  And of course everything in between!   Pizza was served (and quickly devoured!) after the panel session,  and students had the opportunity to mingle informally with our alumni who are studying at various stages in their academic careers in the U.K., US, Hong Kong and Canada, all of whom had incredible stories to share.

Academic Integrity in the age of GenAI

This week, our Year 9 and Year 10 students returned to the topic of Academic Integrity but this lesson focussed specifically on GenAI use. Titled "Academic Integrity in the Age of GenAI", this first lesson (2 lessons in total) aimed to equip them with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complexities and ethical considerations of GenAI in their academic journeys and how to correctly cite the use of GenAI.

The lesson delved into the clear distinctions between acceptable and unacceptable uses of GenAI as agreed in our school’s GenAI Guidance:

Understanding Levels of Integration

To help students conceptualize the various ways GenAI might be involved in their work, the lesson revisited our integration scale.

This helps students identify where their work falls on the scale.

Learning Through Real-World Scenarios

To make these complex concepts tangible, students examined a series of practical scenarios across various subjects. A few examples are shown below:

  • English Literature Essay: Analysing Alex's acceptable use of ChatGPT for an outline (ideas and structure) versus the unacceptable act of not citing it.
  • Science Lab Report: Examining Ben's ethical issues when copying GenAI-generated summaries directly into a report without further analysis or citation, and how he could improve.
  • Art & Design Project: Discussing Chloe's unethical decision to trace a GenAI-generated image and submit it as original work without mention of the tool.
  • Chinese: Highlighting the problems with Grace's approach of using GenAI summaries for analysis without reading the original primary source and only citing the primary source.

Key Reminders for Responsible GenAI Use

The lesson concluded with vital reminders for students to uphold academic integrity:

  • Always cite any GenAI use, even for brainstorming or editing.
  • Use proper citation formats for different AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, PerplexityAI, AI Images, MagicSchool).
  • Consider including screenshots of prompts and responses in an Appendix.
  • Always fact-check AI-generated information as GenAI can "hallucinate" or produce inaccurate content.
  • Maintain your own voice and ideas in your work.
  • Always follow your teacher’s guidance on whether GenAI can be used before beginning an assignment.
  • Always disclose GenAI use to your teacher.

Looking Ahead and Parent Support

GenAI is here to stay, and our goal is to empower students to use it as a tool for learning, not as a shortcut. Transparency and proper citation are crucial for maintaining academic integrity. We encourage open conversations at home about responsible GenAI use. We believe that by fostering these discussions and providing clear guidelines, we are preparing our students to be ethical and responsible digital citizens.
