Historic Splash: DC Cobras Swim to Glory at HKSSF Championship!

What an unforgettable two days at the HKSSF Secondary Swimming Championship. The Discovery College Cobras swim team delivered a sensational showcase of power, speed, and team spirit, bringing home an impressive haul of individual hardware and team trophies.

Battling against top talent from across Tseun Wan and Islands districts, our swimmers racked up numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals across both days of fierce competition.

Team Highlights

  • Girls C Grade — CHAMPIONS!

Our youngest division put on an absolute clinic in depth and determination, dominating their events to finish 1st Place Overall in C Grade!
  • Girls A Grade — RUNNERS-UP!

Demonstrating remarkable grit, tactical racing, and leadership, our senior division pushed the pace all weekend to secure an outstanding 2nd Place Overall.

Record-Equalling Performance

A massive congratulations to Team Captain Amber (Y13 student), who etched her name into the history books with a blistering performance in the A Grade Girls 50m Freestyle. Amber touched the wall in an astonishing 29.64 seconds, equalling the official HKSSF division record!

Celebrating the Whole Squad

Beyond the individual titles and podium finishes, every single swimmer who stepped onto the blocks showed incredible Cobra spirit, cheering loudly for teammates and pushing through tight races in both individual events and relays.

A massive thank you to our coaching staff for their tireless dedication.

Secondary Student Experience for our Upper Primary Parents

On 8 October, each Middle Years Programme (MYP) student was paired with a Diploma Programme (DP) student at our Living Library. Together, they shared their work with Year 5 and 6 parents, showing how the same skill develops through work of increasing complexity.

These pairings made the connection between the two programmes visible. Parents could see how skills developed in the MYP are applied to more demanding work in the DP. For MYP students, presenting alongside a DP partner was also a chance to see what DP work requires and understand how the skills they are building now support their next steps.

The Living Library celebrated both what students have learned and how they are learning. Sharing their learning journeys and artifacts with a real audience gave them an opportunity to bring their communication skills into practice: explaining their thinking, making connections, and speaking with confidence.

Congratulations to all the participating students for their hard work. Thank you to the teachers who coached them and helped curate the work that made this progression visible.

Year 1 Celebration of Learning

Year 1 was delighted to welcome parents and caregivers to our Celebration of Learning.

The event began with a short presentation in which the teachers shared an overview of our current 'Who We Are' unit. They were then invited into the learning space to experience a typical Stay and Play session alongside their children. It was wonderful to see families engaging in a variety of hands-on activities, celebrating the children's learning, independence, and enthusiasm.

Year 7 Author Visit: Sunset Survivors with Lindsay Varty

On 5 October, our Year 7 students had a visitor presentation from an ESF alumna, author and journalist, Lindsay Varty, about her book Sunset Survivors. In this presentation, the students learned about real Hong Kong culture, the sunset industries, and the stories of people behind these disappearing jobs.

Our students were introduced to people working in wet markets and street stalls, as well as to trades like letter writing. They expanded their knowledge of local Hong Kong history, and helped this unique culture and shared identity alive. Our visiting author showed our students the importance of knowledge, history, and communication. Our Year 7 students also had the opportunity to ask questions and cultivate curiosity about their own culture. In the end, everyone felt enlightened, more connected to their local heritage, and eager to learn more about the INS Hong Kong history unit. - contributed by Lindsey C (Year 12 student)

Stronger Together: DC x DBIS Sports Collaboration

We are thrilled to celebrate an exciting new sports partnership between Discovery College and Discovery Bay International School (DBIS). By joining forces, we are expanding opportunities for our student-athletes, pooling talent, and strengthening the bonds across our local DB community.

Here is a look at what our collaborative teams have been up to:

U16 Girls’ Volleyball: Masterclass & Friendly Match

Our U16 Girls, many of whom are completely new to volleyball, recently gathered for a joint session powered by our resident Volleyball Coach, Coach Anto.

The afternoon kicked off with a skill-building masterclass covering fundamentals, followed by an energetic match between the combined squads. It was fantastic to see players from both DC and DBIS encouraging one another, making tremendous progress on the court, and building lasting friendships. A huge thank you to Coach Anto for leading such an inspiring session, and we look forward to the next one on Wednesday, 21 October at 4:00pm.

U18 Girls Rugby

On the pitch, our senior ruggers have united to form a powerful joint DC x DBIS U18 Girls Rugby squad. Showing impressive discipline and commitment, the team has been hitting the field every Monday morning for early training sessions with Coach Viliame.

Their hard work and growing chemistry are all building toward a major test: the upcoming Bill Williams Tournament on November 18 at King's Park. We can't wait to see this combined team bring the noise and represent Discovery Bay on the big stage!

Inspiring Music Workshop with SuRie for our Year 10 and 11 students

The Music Department is thrilled to reflect on the incredible energy our recent Artist in Residence, SuRie, brought to DC.

A multi-talented vocalist, actor, composer, and creative, SuRie spent an extraordinary two days inspiring our young musicians across various year groups. She led a series of dynamic, hands-on workshops tailored specifically to our Cobra and Secondary Choirs, DP Music students, Years 10 and 11, and our Music Scholars. Through these sessions, our students explored composition and creative expression while experiencing the joy of singing.

Beyond the practical workshops, one of the absolute highlights for our students was the opportunity to engage in open Q&A discussions about life in the creative arts. SuRie generously shared authentic advice on navigating the modern music industry, building a sustainable career, and the personal rewards of being a working artist today.

Our students walked away thoroughly energised, equipped with fresh perspectives, and deeply inspired by her warmth, passion, and expertise. We extend our warmest thanks to SuRie for providing such a memorable and impactful learning experience for our whole music community!
