What an incredible day we had on 12 February  as our school community came together to celebrate the Lunar New Year. From literary inspirations to thunderous drumbeats, the energy on campus was a testament to the vibrant culture we share.

Inspiration from the Page: Author Alessandro Ceschi

We kicked off the morning with a special visit from renowned Italian author Alessandro Ceschi. Alessandro met with our DP Chinese B and Language and Culture students to share his fascinating journey through China. Having mastered the language well enough to write a book in Chinese, he provided a unique perspective on the rewards of linguistic perseverance. His stories of immersion and the bridge between European and Chinese cultures left our students feeling truly inspired for their own language-learning journeys.

A Symphony of Tradition and Talent

As noon approached, the festivities moved to the main stage, filling the air with rhythm and history:

• Year 6 Chinese Drums: Our Year 6 students set a powerful tone, opening the ceremony with a disciplined and high-energy drumming performance.

• Secondary Dragon Dance: The spectacle continued as our secondary students brought the traditional dragon to life, weaving through the crowd with incredible coordination and spirit. Watch a short video clip here.

• A Masterclass on the Erhu: We were then treated to a breathtaking performance by our talented student-teacher, Mr. Evan. He performed the famous piece "Horse Racing" (赛马)on the Erhu (二胡). His speed and skill perfectly captured the galloping spirit of the festivities.

Unveiling the Future: Success is Coming

The celebration culminated in the grand unveiling of our new Art Mural. The piece features the blessing 马到成功 (Mǎ Dào Chéng Gōng), which translates to "Success will come as the horse arrives." Created by our student Art Captains, this serves as a beautiful permanent reminder of our collective ambition and the bright future ahead.

As we wrap up these celebrations, we wish our entire school community a prosperous and energetic Year of the Horse!

Yesterday, DC foyer was a hive of activity as primary students gathered to celebrate Chinese New Year through hands-on arts and crafts activities. Organised by the PTA, the event gave students the chance to explore their creativity while learning about festive traditions. From colorful paper dragons to intricate craft designs, the foyer was packed with eager young artists trying their hand at each activity. It was a wonderful celebration that combined fun, culture and creativity for all our students.

As we welcome the energy of the Lunar New Year, our campus has been transformed into a gallery of cultural reflection and student talent. Art has a unique way of bridging the past and the future, and this year, our students have used various mediums to explore themes of heritage, community, and renewal.

The Spirit of Togetherness in Mural Art

Our student Art Captains recently completed a breathtaking mural to mark the Year of the Horse, turning a simple wall into a profound exercise in unity. The piece prominently features the characters “一起” (Together), serving as a constant reminder of our community’s collective strength. This project was enriched by a collaboration with Love21, which allowed for a diverse range of creativity to flourish within the design.

By intentionally texturing the surface to reference the passage of time, the artists paid homage to the rich history behind these cultural traditions. The final composition—filled with galloping horses, delicate blossoms, and shimmering gold—perfectly captures the essence of renewal and the shared hope for resilience as we step into this new lunar cycle.

Year 7 Ceramics: Traditions in Clay

Meanwhile, our Year 7 students have been exploring the tactile world of ceramics. This unit began with the fundamentals of creating pinch pots and mastering the scoring and slipping techniques required to join clay pieces together. This formative exercise provided a wonderful opportunity for students to practice their technical skills while celebrating the specific cultural landscape of Hong Kong.

To bring their sculptures to life, students utilized additional techniques such as carving and painting to add unique contextual details. These finished works were eventually displayed in the foyer, allowing the students to share their cultural appreciation and creative expressions with a wider audience. Seeing the collection together highlights both their individual growth and their respect for local traditions.

Why Visual Art Matters

Through these projects, our students do more than just learn how to create; they learn how to process their world, honor their history, and communicate a desire to preserve tradition. These artworks are a testament to our community’s strength and the bright, cultured future we are building together.

The Year 3 Celebration of Learning, held on Thursday, 12 February was a fantastic success, with students excitedly sharing their recent Unit of Inquiry learning with their parents. This term, the students delved into the central idea of "How the World Works," focusing on matter and its different states.

The students enthusiastically demonstrated their understanding of the topic, connecting their knowledge to real-world scenarios. They explained molecular movement in various states and discussed the effects of heating and cooling. The celebration included demonstrations related to their Unit of Inquiry, procedures for making papier-mâché, and investigations into length, capacity, and weight.

It was wonderful to see the children proudly sharing their work and engaging in thoughtful discussions with their parents about their learning experiences. A big thank you to all the parents who were able to join us for the Year 3 Celebration of Learning, and to the students and teachers for their hard work in preparing this special event!

Last week in Science, Y8 students were excited to apply their learning from the 'You Are What You Eat' unit of work to complete a heart dissection. They viewed the atria, ventricles, heart valves, and blood vessels that supply and leave the heart. Students related their learning of systems and relationships to the heart structure and function, gaining valuable insights through hands-on exploration. The dissection was met with great enthusiasm - perhaps a glimpse of future surgeons in the making!

ACAMIS 2026 proved to be a fantastic competition for our Cobra Basketball Teams. We played phenomenally, communicating effectively and supporting each other on and off court, as well as fighting for every point, rebound, and pass that was made.

The teams have been built on a foundation of trust, encouragement, and dedication, with the tournament the culmination of months of training and growing together. Our games at the ACAMIS tournament reflected our growth; we came up against some top players and strong teams. The challenge inspired us to dig deep and we have emerged far stronger as a result of this experience. 

A special shout-out to our "MVP's" Vili Turagaiviu, Zak Suardi, Lucia Gimenez-Reyna Castillo and Giulia Bastiaens, for not only hustling consistently on court but also uplifting fellow team players. Though we may not have come out on top at this ACAMIS, we are confident that, with the same attitude, our team will surely bring back the gold in 2027! 

We are delighted to share that Desmond, a Year 10 student, secured first place in the Hong Kong Ho Pui Downhill Mountain Bike Race. The Ho Pui Downhill (DH) mountain bike trail in Tai Lam Country Park, Hong Kong, is a steep, technical, and fast, tree-lined course, often featuring hairpin corners, rock gardens, and jumps. With an average speed of 22.5 kmph, his time was 3 mins 38 seconds (3:38:101), beating the second place by over 1.5 seconds. He is sponsored by Knolly Bikes, and we at DC are extremely proud of his Hong Kong Cycling Association victory.

This year, a group of Year 12 and 13 DC students are hosting the LoveFromLuke blood drive to support Hong Kong’s blood donation efforts. 

A single donation can save up to 3 lives, helping treat victims of accidents, cancer and chronic illnesses. There is truly no substitute for human blood – which is why every donor counts. 

Last year, we received scores of sign-ups, as well as some walk-ins, finishing off with a total of 64 donors. Let’s make this year even more impactful!

We are delighted to welcome Tanya Landman, a Carnegie Medal-winning author, to Discovery College on 18 and 19 March. This visit is a unique opportunity for students to engage with a celebrated writer and gain insights into the craft of storytelling.

Tanya will be spending Wednesday, 18 March with our Primary students and Thursday, 19 March with our Secondary students.
