Year 11 Theatre Production: She Kills Monsters

The Year 11 production of She Kills Monsters was a resounding success on Tuesday evening!

We had a healthy audience of friends and families watching, and they seemed to love it - laughing at the jokes, exclaiming at the slurs, and following our heroines' journeys from the edge of their seats. The students did a great job of bringing us with them through the world of 90's Ohio, and the fantasy Dungeons & Dragons game world of Tillius Paladin.

The production was all their own, with Year 11 students planning everyhing, and we're proud of the theatre makers this cohort has become! Well done!

Checkmate! Blue House Triumphs in PTA Secondary Chess Tournament

After ten days of intense strategic warfare and "fierce" concentration, our Secondary School PTA Chess Competition officially concluded today. What started with 82 hopeful participants narrowed down to a thrilling final round that saw nerves of steel on display.

A massive congratulations to Blue House, our overall champions! Their victory was a true team effort, fueled by high participation rates across all year levels and some undeniable individual brilliance at the top boards.

On the individual front, we recognise two outstanding players who navigated the brackets to claim their trophies:

  • Senior Tournament (Years 10-12) Winner: Ivan, 10B
  • Senior Student Runner Up: Mahir, 12B
  • Junior Tournament Winner (Years 7-9): Jayco, 8P
  • Junior Tournament Runner Up: Aarav, 9B

Thank you to our wonderful PTA who supported the event throughout by supervising matches and providing trophies for the winners. This event was such a resounding success that we are excited to announce it will now become an annual House tradition.

But we aren't stopping there—looking ahead to next year, we plan to expand the field even further by opening the competition to our primary students. It’s never too early to start thinking three moves ahead!

Year 3 Celebration of Learning

Year 3 students had their Celebration of Learning on Thursday. They showcased an abundance of creativity and imagination. This past term, the students truly immersed themselves in transdisciplinary learning, weaving their central idea and lines of inquiry into maths, language, and visual arts.

They shared their diverse artistic expressions, all inspired by nature, including artwork, sketches, poetry, and paintings, exploring the styles of various artists. In particular, they enjoyed sharing their photography and editing skills, alongside demonstrating their research and thinking skills within their digital portfolios. It was a wonderful culmination of various skills and learning experiences.

PTA Support our China in Action: Learning Mandarin in the Real World

Our Year 9 and Year 10 students will soon be heading to Zhuhai for their China in Action immersion days — day trips designed to put classroom Chinese to work in the real world. Year 9 will go on 15 June and Year 10 will go on 16 June.

For Year 9, the day includes a bike ride through the Riyue Xinbei scenic area, a calligraphy workshop at the historic Beshan Dayuan courtyard, and a food culture investigation at a local restaurant. All activities tied to their current MYP Chinese Language units on customs, community, and culture.

Year 10 steps it up. Having crossed the border before, students now navigate more independently: asking locals for directions entirely in Mandarin as they take part in activities to investigate local shops and products. Midday, the challenge continues as students take the lead at a traditional Chinese restaurant; they must navigate the bustling dim sum service, identifying classic dishes and placing their orders in Mandarin. This builds the energy needed for the afternoon at the Hongqi Sugar Factory, where students complete a guided tour and a hands-on sugarcane-making workshop conducted in Chinese. The day ends with a group oral reflection in Mandarin before returning to Hong Kong.

Both trips are a direct extension of what students are studying in class. Students will use Mandarin in real situations: reading signs and menus, asking for directions, ordering food, and completing short “mission” tasks with local shop staff — that’s the curriculum.

For more information on the programme, read here.

We look forward to sharing photos after each trip. We’d also like to thank the PTA for their ongoing support of programme development and for subsidising the cost of these immersion days.

Please review the itinerary together and sign up for the trip as soon as possible.

TEDx Youth: Kaleidoscope

What is TEDx?

TEDx Discovery College Youth is a student-led initiative where young people organise and host their own TED-style events. Discovery College is proud to provide a platform for our students to share their unique perspectives on this year’s theme, Kaleidoscope. This theme explores the many different sides of human life and our ever changing world. Each presentation will be filmed and published on the official TEDx YouTube channel, allowing our students to share their ideas with a global audience..

When is TEDx happening?

TEDx Discovery College Youth will take place on 8 June, from 5-7pm. We invite you to join us for an evening of inspiring talks centred on our Kaleidoscope theme. To secure your place, please scan the QR code attached on the event poster or click here.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Remote Learning Guidelines

To ensure learning continues as smoothly as possible during inclement weather or unexpected school closures, we have updated our "Online Learning" protocol.

We are moving to a more integrated system within Google Classroom, utilising the Google Meet feature within our Google classrooms.

The New Workflow: What Your Child Needs to Do

In the event of a transition to remote learning, students should follow these simple steps:

  • Follow the Standard Timetable: Students should log on according to their usual school timetable for the affected day.
  • Access Google Classroom: Students log into their specific subject classroom for that period.
  • Click the 'Join' Link: A dedicated Google Meet link will be visible in the header banner of each Classroom. Students simply click this link to enter the live session.

Lesson Timings

The main school day structure remains unchanged, with only adjustments to the lesson timings:

Period 1: [9:10] – [10.30]
Break:     [10.30] – [10.50]
Period 2: [10.50] – [12.10]
Period 3: [12.10] – [1.30]
Lunch:     [1.30] – [2.10]
Period 4:  [2.10] – [3.30]

Resources and Support

We understand that changes to digital routines can sometimes be a bit confusing at first. To help your child navigate this updated system, we have produced a step-by-step guide:

Remote Learning Student Workflow Guide

This has been sent to all students; however, we recommend that you review this guide so they are prepared in advance of any weather-related disruptions.

Thank you for your continued support in ensuring our students stay connected and engaged with their education.
