Our Year 9 and Year 10 students will soon be heading to Zhuhai for their China in Action immersion days — day trips designed to put classroom Chinese to work in the real world. Year 9 will go on 15 June and Year 10 will go on 16 June.
For Year 9, the day includes a bike ride through the Riyue Xinbei scenic area, a calligraphy workshop at the historic Beshan Dayuan courtyard, and a food culture investigation at a local restaurant. All activities tied to their current MYP Chinese Language units on customs, community, and culture.
Year 10 steps it up. Having crossed the border before, students now navigate more independently: asking locals for directions entirely in Mandarin as they take part in activities to investigate local shops and products. Midday, the challenge continues as students take the lead at a traditional Chinese restaurant; they must navigate the bustling dim sum service, identifying classic dishes and placing their orders in Mandarin. This builds the energy needed for the afternoon at the Hongqi Sugar Factory, where students complete a guided tour and a hands-on sugarcane-making workshop conducted in Chinese. The day ends with a group oral reflection in Mandarin before returning to Hong Kong.
Both trips are a direct extension of what students are studying in class. Students will use Mandarin in real situations: reading signs and menus, asking for directions, ordering food, and completing short “mission” tasks with local shop staff — that’s the curriculum.

We look forward to sharing photos after each trip. We’d also like to thank the PTA for their ongoing support of programme development and for subsidising the cost of these immersion days.
Please review the itinerary together and sign up for the trip as soon as possible.
