A Message from Our Principal

I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you at various school events - including the Parent Information Fair, Scholarship Tea morning, and just waving hello at the gate in the morning! - and I'd like to highlight an upcoming Parent Coffee Morning on Thursday, 25 September.

I look forward to chatting with many of you there. This is an opportunity to meet and network with other parents across the school as well. DC's strength is our incredible, vibrant community, and we are so grateful that each of you has put your trust in us to educate your child. We look forward to hearing more from you, and I encourage you to register for the event using this link.

I am sure that many of you are aware that we have some extreme weather approaching over the coming week. We are currently planning for a substantial typhoon that is forecast to be in close proximity on Tuesday evening, which may impact whether the EDB decide to open schools on Wednesday.

With this in mind, I would like to remind you about our Discovery College Inclement Weather Procedures (linked), and, particularly, to emphasise that if a signal above a T8 - i.e. a T10 - is raised and/ or if there is Black Rain, this means that our synchronous online learning protocols (live zoom calls) will be suspended. This is to allow staff and students to focus on the safety of themselves and their families, and to respond to any emergencies that may be caused by this weather. Please look out for additional communication as Typhoon Ragasa draws closer on the ESF App.

Thank you, again, for being part of our school community, and I look forward to seeing many of you next week.

Scholarship Morning Tea

On 15 September, Discovery College hosted a Scholarship Morning Tea to celebrate the achievements of our current scholars and warmly welcome our newest recipients. Our Principal, Mrs Pollack opened the event with an inspiring address, highlighting how each student exemplifies DC’s values and outcomes.

Mentors introduced their scholars, who shared their accomplishments and goals for the year ahead. From academic milestones to community initiatives to some outstanding performances, this was a testament to the diverse talent that floursihes at DC and to our dedicated staff who have guided and supported them in their journey.

We look forward to the continued contributions of our scholars for another year of growth and success.

Visit from Villa Kunterbunt for Year 3 Students

The Year 3 students are exploring communities and the systems they use to meet needs and achieve shared goals. While we have first looked at our school community, we are now expanding our focus to the wider community.

On Wednesday, we invited  Ms. Barbara to discuss her work with Villa Kunterbunt, an organisation set up to rescue and rehome pets in Hong Kong. The students were captivated by the presentation, learning about the systems, collaboration, and efforts required to run and sustain Villa Kunterbunt.

They left feeling inspired and eager to take action. The students are excited to find ways to support Villa Kunterbunt, and we look forward to seeing how their learning journey unfolds and the impact they will make through this unit.

Student-Led Service Club Expo

We are incredibly proud to have showcased our student-led service clubs during our recent Expo, which sought to raise awareness of the opportunities for other students to engage in service, and sign-up for those that aligned with their interests.

Over a dozen of our dynamic clubs, with interests ranging from fashion to journalism, and from investing to storying-telling, and everything in between, set up booths to showcase their team’s mission, past achievements and upcoming targets.

The event provided a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 7 to 13 to discover a wide array of co-curricular options. Engaging with these clubs is a perfect way to explore new passions, develop valuable skills and meet new friends. This wonderful showcase of student initiative and creativity would not have been possible without the excellent coordination and leadership of our SAA/CAS captains, who worked hard to facilitate the event, with support and guidance from Ms. O'Connor.

For anyone inspired to join, sign-ups are still available on Ding! Don't miss your chance to get involved.

Visit from Mark Grist to Secondary English classes

Last week saw the English Department host the highly acclaimed rap battler and poet Mark Grist. Mark gave performances to the Year 7 students - memorably showcasing how to build 18 different board games into a 2 minute, high energy rap - as well as a rap battle workshop to Year 10 and 11 students.

It was a wonderful opportunity for us all to learn the art of assonance when applied to live rap poetry, and - in doing so - develop greater fluency and engagement in our communication.

Needless to say, students were heard rapping their way down the DC corridors all the way to the buses and beyond!

Embracing Mid-Autumn Festival in our Classrooms

This year, our students are getting into the spirit of the Mid-Autumn festival by exploring its rich cultural elements right in their classrooms. We are taking this opportunity to deepen our intercultural understanding and celebrate unity and togetherness through communal creativity.

As well as providing a focus for cultural and lingusitic lessons with our Primary students, in our secondary Chinese classes, students are connecting their current units to the festival in diverse ways. Our Chinese Language and Literature students are focusing on moon imagery in a special poetry recital, while our Chinese Language Aquisition students are designing community spaces to facilitate local cultural celebrations and even planning a travel study to experience traditional celebrations in China.

This interdisciplinary approach extends to our art classrooms as well. Students are incorporating Chinese cultural elements into their moon-themed landscape paintings and getting hands-on with ceramic moon cake making. They are also learning about the intricate designs of traditional lanterns by deconstructing them.

These projects offer valuable opportunities for students to engage with a new culture while also celebrating the sense of community and togetherness that the Mid-Autumn festival represents.
