DC Cobras claim victory at 2025 Green Division ACAMIS basketball tournament

Last week, our U20 boys' and girls' basketball teams participated in the 2025 Green Division ACAMIS basketball tournament in Xi'an hosted by XLIS. Through the 3 days of intense basketball, both teams showcased exceptional talent, each suffering only one defeat throughout the competition, and proudly continuing their impressive four-year winning streak.

Every player displayed remarkable spirit and sportsmanship, which were instrumental in securing their victories. Their dedication and teamwork were evident on the court, making us all proud. Both teams have achieved a tremendous amount of improvement since the beginning of the season and this tournament was a thrilling chance for them to be able to showcase their hard work.

The players would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to their coaches, Mr. McLeay and Mr. Turagaivui, for their unwavering support and guidance throughout the season. A special thanks also goes to Ms. Naivalu for making this incredible opportunity possible.

Student Sustainability Leadership Conference

This past weekend, Discovery College came alive with energy and purpose as over 100 students from across the Greater Bay Area gathered for the first-ever ESF Sustainability Summit, themed "Collaboration, Not Control." The event brought together passionate student leaders, educators, and sustainability advocates for a day filled with inspiring keynotes, hands-on workshops, and powerful discussions on tackling real-world environmental challenges. From climate activism and policy change to sustainable innovation, students explored how leadership and collective action can drive real impact.

The day was a huge success, fueled by the enthusiasm and engagement of every participant. Students didn't just listen, they led conversations, challenged perspectives, and brainstormed solutions for sustainability initiatives in their own schools and communities.

The fireside chat with youth leaders from Climate Incubator, NESS, and 2041 Hong Kong sparked thought-provoking discussions, while the breakout sessions pushed students to think critically about systems change and leadership.

A special thank you goes to Ms. O’Connor and the incredible student leadership team, whose dedication and hard work made this event possible. Their efforts ensured that this summit wasn’t just a conference, but the beginning of a movement and one that empowers students to take action and build a more sustainable future.

Love from Luke Blood Drive 2025

We are thrilled to announce the 2025 LoveFromLuke Blood Drive. The event will take place on 4 March  on the 4th floor Senior Student Center at Discovery College.

1 donation saves 3 lives!
Patients require blood donation for surgeries, serious injuries or illness. There is no replacement for blood, and the shelf life is very low. Currently, the Hong Kong Red Cross has a very limited supply for emergencies. A stable blood supply is crucial for the healthcare system, ensuring patients receive life-saving blood transfusions. By donating blood, you can help ensure the Red Cross continues to support individuals in our community who rely on these vital donations.

Blood donation also has many benefits for the donor such as reducing blood pressure, risk of heart attack and iron levels. It also can reduce your risk of cancer. Donors receive a health check up before donation which can reveal potential health issues.

Parent Education Workshops

MYP Assessment Parent Workshop Highlights

This past week, we hosted an informative and engaging MYP Assessment Part II Parent Workshop on Thursday, 20 February. The goal of the workshop was to help parents understand how we assess students’ academic performance in various disciplines, such as English and Mathematics, using the criteria specified by the International Baccalaureate (IB).

In the workshop, parents learned how teachers design assessment tasks using these criteria, as well as the importance of feedback processes that help students improve. Key areas of discussion included:

  • Understanding Criteria-Related Assessment: Parents gained a better understanding of how the MYP assessment objectives are organised and how to use this knowledge to identify patterns that can support their child’s learning.

  • Interactive Learning Experience: During the workshop, parents experienced both giving and receiving feedback, which led to valuable discussions about effective feedback practices. We concluded that for feedback to be truly effective, students need to have a clear understanding of their learning goals. Similarly, teachers must ensure their instructions are clear and continuously monitor students' learning progress through formative assessment. This ongoing process helps create a more focused and productive learning environment where students can better understand and act upon the feedback they receive.

  • Self-Regulation and Advocacy: We discussed the importance of students developing an understanding of the assessment criteria. Parents learned how to encourage their children to advocate for themselves by asking clarifying questions and seeking constructive feedback to drive improvement. Additionally, we emphasised the importance of students engaging in critical reflection in response to their teachers' feedback, which helps them identify areas for growth and enhance their learning outcomes.

A big thank you to all the parents who participated in the workshop! Your involvement is essential in helping our students succeed.

For more detailed information, please refer to the slides shared during the session.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our future events!

Digital Citizenship Updates

Our Year 7 and Year 8 students have been focussing on the category Stay Informed and Safe Stay by learning how to effectively use search engines to improve their search results so they can Search Like A Pro. To further support their learning, we encourage you to reinforce these tips and tricks at home. Engaging in discussions about their search strategies can help them become more proficient in finding accurate information online. You can find our search engine tips and tricks on our Parent Portal  Digital Citizenship page.

Additionally, our Year 9 and 10 pupils have been focusing on the category Stay Informed. They looked at a topic of what technology might look like in the next 30 years. We started by watching a 'Tomorrow's World' documentary from 1995, which explored the technologies expected to dominate in 2025. Students identified both accurate predictions and those that didn't quite take off. From this, they were tasked with imagining the next big emerging technologies and creating a visual representation of their ideas.

Please help highlight these topics at home to further engage pupils in the importance of understanding and using technology positively.

Fostering Global Educational Connections

We continue to strengthen our ties with international educators, demonstrating our commitment to global educational collaboration. In January, we had the pleasure of hosting educators from Seodong Middle School, a Korean public school. The visiting teachers were particularly impressed by our students' confidence and their ability to articulate ideas on various topics. They were also inspired by the diverse cultural community within our school, noting how it enriches the learning environment. The observations affirm our school's success in developing confident, holistic learners willing to engage with global perspectives.

Building on this meaningful exchange, our MYP Coordinator, Ms. Alison Yang, recently had the privilege of facilitating professional development for 45 Korean teachers as part of an innovative partnership between the International Baccalaureate Organization and the Korean government. This initiative aims to implement the Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Korean public secondary schools.

During the workshop, Ms. Yang worked alongside these dedicated educators to explore authentic assessment practices in the MYP. The engagement and enthusiasm shown by the Korean teachers highlighted the shared commitment to providing meaningful learning experiences for students across different educational contexts.

These partnerships reflect Discovery College's ongoing commitment to connecting educators both locally and globally, fostering professional learning communities that go beyond national boundaries.

Instagram Teen Accounts Now in Hong Kong!

You may have heard that Instagram's new 'Teen Accounts' feature has arrived in Hong Kong! This initiative is designed to provide built-in protections for teens while giving parents peace of mind. Key aspects to note include:

Enhanced Privacy: Teen accounts are set to private by default, meaning only approved followers can see their content.

Messaging Restrictions: Teens can only receive messages from people they follow, reducing unwanted interactions.

Content Control: Automatic restrictions on sensitive content ensure a safer browsing experience.

For more information on how these changes can affect your teen's experience, please visit our parent portal on the Digital Citizenship page. You will find details on the key features and you will also be able to access all our helpful parent resources to help support your child’s digital use.

Stay informed and ensure your teen's online safety!

Update from ESF Centre on Parent Engagement

ESF values opportunities to engage with parents on issues impacting the ESF experience. Typically, these issues are resolved informally with the class teacher and or leadership team. However, when matters remain unresolved and escalate to formal complaints, ESF aims to address them effectively and gain insights for continuous improvement.

To this end, ESF has developed a Complaints Management System (CMS). The CMS features an online Complaint Form that parents can use to lodge formal complaints. This system is part of the updated ESF Complaints Policy accessible via the ESF App under Ding!
