Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival: A Campus - Wide Community Experience

What a wonderful way to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival! Our campus recently lit up with the spirit of tradition, community, and learning, creating some beautiful memories for our students, staff, and families.

Deepening Cultural Understanding

The heart of our celebration was a genuine focus on learning. Student representatives from our Chinese classrooms shared their knowledge about the festival's deep cultural meanings and traditions. This knowledge was shared with the entire school community during the primary assemblies and a special staff morning briefing, ensuring everyone understood the significance of this important festival.

Artistry and Transdisciplinary Learning

The connection between culture and creativity was on full display! Our Art Department delivered an incredible showcase of student artwork across the campus. These amazing artworks didn't just decorate our halls; they created authentic transdisciplinary connections, bringing the cultural understanding of the Mid-Autumn Festival to a vibrant, new level for all to appreciate.

Community, Crafts & Staff Bonding

The success of this celebration was truly a community effort:

  • The PTA played an essential role, hosting a lively art and craft workshop. This hands-on activity brought families and friends together, offering a fantastic opportunity to bond while creating beautiful, festive crafts.

  • A special highlight was the delightful Mooncake Workshop! This exclusive event for staff and their children offered a wonderful opportunity for our educators to bond while learning the art of making this traditional delicacy and creating beautiful, shared memories together.

Thank you to everyone—students, staff, the Art Department, and the wonderful PTA—for making this year's Mid-Autumn Festival celebration so memorable and meaningful!

Box of Hope Charity Drive

Once again this year, we are excited to be supporting the annual Box of Hope Drive, and we are asking for. your help.

Students in Year 3 were visited by Box of Hope CEO, Lisa Beattie, and the school volunteer, Fiona O'Donell on Monday. Lisa shared an overview of the organisation and the systems involved in how the boxes are collected and distributed.  This aligned wonderfully with the Year 3’s Unit of Inquiry on How We Organise Ourselves, and the systems involved in communities. We will be relying on our students in Y3 to spread the word.

What is Box of Hope?

Box of Hope is a Hong Kong-based charity that collects donated boxes or bags filled with essentials and treats for other, more needy children.

What can I do?

Start collecting items now. You can do this individually or with another family. Stickers will be given out to all students in Primary, with more available from the Library on Floor 2 or the main reception. There are separate stickers for Primary and Secondary-aged recipients.

When is collection day?

Filled boxes or bags can be brought into school from Monday, 20 October to Friday, 24 October. Our final collection day is the morning of Friday, 31 October. Please note that after this date, boxes should be delivered directly to the sorting centre in Exchange Square, in Central.

You can also send in empty boxes for us to reuse, as there is always a need for more in the community.

House Boxapalooza

Each house member who brings in a box earns a house tally point as part of the house spirit connection.

A special request directly from Box of Hope

Over the last few years, there has been an increased demand for items suitable for teens. If you can’t do a whole box, please consider donating some of the following items, such as cute stationery, notepads, sanitary pads, roll-on deodorant, or anything else that can be used to top up boxes in the sorting centre.

Watch here for the Box of Hope CEO message.

We can’t wait to see the donated boxes that have been filled with love and care over the next few weeks.  If you have further questions, please review the official Box of Hope site here or contact Ms Lam in the Library, library@dc.edu.hk.

Year 4-6 Swimming Gala

Our Year 4–6 Gala has been a wonderful celebration of energy, teamwork, and community spirit over the past two days. Students have given their all in every event, showing determination, and true sportsmanship. Thank you to those that were able to join us, and for the part you played in creating an electric atmosphere, where all students felt supported.

Congratulations to all participants and a huge thank you to Mr. Tomlin and the PE department for planning and delivering this fantastic event.

Looking ahead: Diwali Celebration, Friday 17 October

We are excited to announce our upcoming celebration of Diwali, the Festival of Lights, at Discovery College on Friday, 17 October 2025. In collaboration with our Parent Teacher Association (PTA), we have planned a wonderful day filled with fun and engaging activities to honour this special occasion for the students.

Our celebration will begin with a traditional dance performance featuring students from across the College, choreographed by our talented Ms Nebel. The performance will begin at 8:10am in the Foyer entrance of the school. We invite you to stay and watch the students perform this dance as you drop off your children at school.

Throughout the day, Primary students will have various activities to engage with in their classrooms, designed to celebrate Diwali.

Finally, we invite everyone, from students to staff, to come to school either dressed in vibrant, colourful, or traditional attire to celebrate this meaningful cultural day, should they wish to. Alternatively, students can choose to wear school uniform.

We look forward to celebrating Diwali together and making it a memorable experience for our community!

Fun Friday

We were treated this morning to an eclectic fun friday music playlist from our Student Council, which moved between the K Pop Demon Hunters and Abba, and everything in between!

After energising us through music on our arrival to school, our Year 12 Council Reps led our Primary students through playground games at break time. This included a parachute team-building challenge and hula hooping competition.

This new tradition, of celebrating the last Friday of each month (today was in honour of September, given the impact of the typhoon) is proving a wonderful way to raise school spirit and provide meaningful leadership opportunities for students. Moreover, it is a lot of fun!

We look forward to the next Fun Friday on 31 October, which may have a spooky feel to it... more details will be shared closer to this date.

Year 5 Cultural Fair Highlights

On Tuesday, our Year 5 students dazzled peers, parents and teachers at the Cultural Fair, as part of their Celebration of Learning. Students showcased their learning about a variety cultures that sparked their interest. Each child presented unique projects, featuring traditional clothing, customs, delicious food and fascinating facts. Their enthusiasm and creativity shone through, making it a memorable celebration of diversity. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and the pride they took in sharing their discoveries!

Santa's Grotto - Santa Wanted!

We are thrilled to announce that, due to popular demand, Santa's Grotto will be at the DC PTA Family Fun Day once again this year! Mark your calendars for 6 December, when you can visit Santa's magical grotto from 12:00 - 4:00pm. We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers for our Santa's Grotto. If you have a theatrical background and would like to embrace the role of Santa Claus, we'd love to hear from you!

This is a fantastic opportunity for your little ones to write a special message to the big man himself and hand-deliver it directly to him. We can’t wait to see the joy on their faces!

Looking forward to a festive day filled with fun and holiday spirit!
