The event celebrated teamwork and the spirit of belonging within our Houses. Highlights included remarkable individual performances, wild colstumes, parents competing in the tug of war and heartwarming moments of camaraderie all around. Congratulations to all our students for showing courage and perseverance in their events. Their respect for one another and joy in celebrating each other’s achievements were wonderful to witness and serve as a reminder about the value of sportsmanship and teamwork.

The points for the day will contribute to the overall House Championships.

Unveiling Masquerade

It is with immense pride that our department invites our school community to the opening of the IBDP Visual Arts Exhibition: Masquerade, a showcase that represents the culmination of two years of rigorous inquiry, technical refinement, and profound personal discovery. The Class of ’26 has not merely completed a curriculum; they have navigated a complex journey of the heart and what it means to create and communicate.

Masquerade serves as a powerful lens through which our students explore the interplay between hidden identities and the transformative power of self-expression. You will encounter works that dive deep into the emotional landscapes – some beautiful, some comical, and others intentionally unsettling.

Our department has been lucky to watch the students skilfully visualise their authentic voice through a selection of mediums that allow concepts to resonate. Skilful oil painting and charcoal drawing, ambitious sculpture, meticulous printmaking, fashion design and digital drawing are some of the countless mediums our artists have mastered and are ready to exhibit. We are so proud that some students have already been accepted into prestigious art programmes for their talented work.

Please join us to celebrate the remarkable artists at Masquerade:

  • Date: Wednesday, 18 March
  • Time: 5:30pm – 8:00pm
  • Location: Senior Student Center, 4F, Discovery College

We look forward to unveiling hidden meanings with you!

U20 Boys Football rise to the top of ISSFHK

Our DC U20 Boys Football squad has had a busy few weeks of fixtures which has culminated in them rising to the top of their ISSFHK League. Two fixtures last week against International Christian School and Island School resulted in two impressive victories. Building on that momentum, the team delivered two more strong performances this week, defeating ISF and Shatin School in their remaining group matches. Their commitment and teamwork have been exceptional, and we now wish them the very best of luck in the upcoming semi-finals. Following that, the squad will proudly represent our school at ACAMIS.

Year 13 Solo Performances & Red Leap Workshop

Year 13 Solo Performances

On Monday evening, the year 13 Higher Level Theatre students performed their examination pieces to a small, warm crowd of supportive parents, teachers and peers. Their work marks their final performance for the course; using their research of a practitioner's aspect in their own pieces of devised theatre.
Luke's work confronted the audience with Katie Mitchell's famous use of close up live cinema to show the interiority of his character, through a layered multi-gendered  perspective. His work was daring and brave, and simultaneously deeply touching.

Nathaniel too brought a tear to our eyes as he reflected forwards into a time of leaving home for university, and creating his own roots for his future far from his family and youth. His work used the multimedia approach employed by Robert Lepage, and both performances were very well received. A huge congratulations to both of these HL Theatre students, and we wish them well in their futures on stage!

Red Leap Workshops

This week DC had the privilege of hosting Red Leap, an innovative company from New Zealand, known internationally for their amazing performances of Shaun Tan's 'The Arrival' and their latest work, 'Wrest'. We brought over two of their lead actors, including their artistic director, to lead workshops for our years 10-12 Theatre students.

Through both half-day and full-day workshops, students were highly engaged through exploring perspectives on stage, lighting elements and points of view through lighting, and characterisation work through physicality. Alongside the Theatrical learning, there were fabulous interdisciplinary connections to MYP Media and DP Film that were authentic and easily applicable to students' projects moving forwards. The students thoroughly enjoyed their learning and no doubt we'll be seeing much of this work infiltrate and inform their performance choices over the next few months and beyond.

Much gratitude goes to Ella and Louise from Red Leap, and all those who made these workshops possible at DC.

Y9 I&S Students raise money for Crossroads Foundation

The year 9 I&S students used their entrepreneurial skills for the unit: We're in Business, in order to raise money for Crossroads Foundation. Working in small teams, students applied their enterprise skills to trade and sell products, with all proceeds being donated to Crossroads Foundation. This Hong Kong-based charity performs vital work within the local community, and we are proud to support their mission through this practical school project.

The students raised an incredible $13,268.20 HKD!

Moreover, they raised awareness of this important charity and the work they do to support our community, and the skills required to make a difference themselves.

Important Information regarding MYP Service as Action Programme & Off-site Activities

As we progress through the school year, we would like to take this opportunity to share some important information regarding the MYP Service as Action program for our Secondary MYP Students.

Your child’s engagement in this programme is an integral part of their learning journey, and we are committed to ensuring they have a meaningful and safe experience.

About the MYP Service as Action Program

The Service as Action program is designed to encourage students to actively participate in community engagement that aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Throughout the year, your child will engage in various projects that focus on addressing community needs, both within the school and the broader local area. These projects are meant to foster a sense of responsibility, collaboration, and empathy, helping students develop into globally-minded citizens.

Throughout the Service as Action programme, students will:

  • Explore global challenges and take action that contributes to these goals, which include eradicating poverty, promoting health and well-being, ensuring quality education, and more.

  • The Service as Action program emphasises the development of Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, such as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and self-management. These skills are essential for students to succeed both academically and personally.

  • Reflection is a critical aspect of the Service as Action program. Students are encouraged to think deeply about their experiences, the impact of their actions, and how they have grown as individuals. This reflective practice helps students understand the value of their contributions and how they can continue to make a difference in the future.

  • The program encourages students to work together, both within their school and with the broader community. This collaboration helps them build relationships, understand diverse perspectives, and create positive change through collective effort.

Students will engage in various forms of service, including:

  • Advocacy: Raising awareness and support for a specific cause, such as creating a social media campaign to promote sustainable practices.
  • Action Research: Investigating a community issue to understand its root causes and sharing the findings to inform and inspire change.
  • Social Entrepreneurship: Creating innovative solutions or enterprises to address social or environmental challenges, such as developing a product to reduce waste.
  • Participation: Being actively involved in community life and decision-making processes, such as joining a local youth council or participating in community events.
  • Community Building: Strengthening connections and relationships within a community, such as organising a school-wide cultural exchange event.

The Nature of MYP Service as Action

The MYP Service as Action programme is not just an extracurricular activity; it is a core component of the Middle Years Programme curriculum. As part of the IB philosophy, Service as Action is integrated into the educational experience, ensuring that students develop a deep understanding of community engagement and global citizenship. This program is offered during Discovery Time, allowing students to explore their interests, apply their learning in real-world contexts, and make meaningful contributions to their community. By embedding service into the curriculum, we ensure that every student participates in actions that are reflective, impactful, and aligned with the values of the IB framework.

Parental Supervision for Off-Site Activities

While most of the Service as Action activities are conducted within the school premises, there may be instances where your child expresses an interest in participating in off-site direct service engagements. These off-site activities are an excellent opportunity for students to apply their skills and knowledge in real-world contexts, and we encourage their participation when appropriate.

However, it is important to note that if your child wishes to engage in any off-site activities, they must do so under the supervision of a parent or guardian. The school will not be responsible for supervising students during these off-site engagements, and it is crucial that parents ensure their child's safety and well-being during these activities.

To facilitate a smooth process, we request that parents discuss any potential off-site service activities with their child’s SAA mentor beforehand. This will help ensure that the activity aligns with the program's objectives and that all necessary precautions are taken.

How You Can Support Your Child

We greatly appreciate your support in encouraging your child to actively participate in the Service as Action program.

Here are a few ways you can assist:

  • Discuss with your child the importance of service and how it contributes to their personal growth and the community.
  • Help them identify off-site service opportunities that align with their interests and ensure they are conducted safely.
  • Stay in communication with their Service as Action mentor to monitor progress and provide guidance when needed.

Thank you for your continued partnership in making the MYP  Service as Action program a success.
