At Discovery College, we prioritise comprehensive language education as a vital component of our curriculum. From Year 1 through to Year 13, English serves as the primary medium of instruction across all subjects, ensuring a consistent and effective learning environment for our students.
Students also study Chinese throughout the Primary Years Programme, either as a language acquisition subject or - for students with high levels of proficiency, including those for whom Chinese is a home language - via Chinese Language and Literature. This approach continues into the Middle Years Programme for the vast majority of students; a small number of students may take Spanish as a language acquisition subject, as determined by the College based on a number of criteria.
In the Diploma Programme, students may choose to pursue either Chinese or Spanish, at a level (e.g. ‘Ab Initio’ for beginner learners; as a language acquisition (B) subject at Standard or Higher Level; or via Language and Literature (Chinese only)) determined by the College based on the appropriate level of challenge for each learner. Alternatively, students with a home language other than English or Chinese may pursue studies in this language via a Self-Taught Language A course in accordance with prevailing IB regulations.
A key part of one of our five DC Outcomes is being internationally minded. With this in mind, beyond our formal programmes the College encourages a multilingual environment and actively works to celebrate the remarkable linguistic diversity of our community. Our approach to language education fosters academic success and also prepares students to thrive in a globalised world.
