Last weekend, our student-led secretariat consisting of five Year 13s and two Year 12s–Secretary Generals Rysa and Malhar, Deputy Secretary-General Alexander, Head of Finance Mark, Head of Marketing Nathan K, Head of Logistics Horus and Head of Design Jasmine facilitated Discovery College’s third Model United Nations conference, hosting over 200 people.
This event engages students from across Hong Kong in discussions on issues ranging from the ongoing Taliban regime in Afghanistan in the General Assembly to the historical 1979 Nicaraguan Revolution.
We find it essential to remain informed about our geopolitical landscape, with an understanding of jarring global issues being crucial to effectively voicing concerns and contributing to meaningful resolutions. As such, this year’s theme of “Down the Rabbit Hole” served as a metaphor for our journey into the complexities of international relations. Just as Alice navigated a surreal world in Alice in Wonderland, we too must explore the interconnectedness of global challenges, illuminating pressing issues and fostering a deeper awareness of the widespread issues faced by various regions.
DCMUN was honoured to host a key global leader for change, Mr. Eric Stryson, founder of the Global Institute for Tomorrow (GIFT), and Ms. Chloe Pollack, our College Principal, as guest speakers for the event. Whilst Mr. Styrson spoke about technology’s role in supply chains and integral aspects of geopolitics, Ms. Pollack discussed principles such as the Cynefin Framework and the principles behind Aesop’s fable “The Oak and the Reed” and its relevance to global affairs.
We are proud to announce that DC won over 5 awards, ranging from Most Improved to Best Speaker to Best Delegate at the conference against over 12 schools across Hong Kong attending the conference. Congratulations, in particular, to Eric as Best Delegate of the Human Rights Council, Riya and Stephanie as Best Speaker of the General Assembly and Merel and Aleena as Most Improved of the General Assembly. Special thanks go to Mahirr for serving as Deputy Committee Chair of the Human Rights Council and to Ashley, Nathan C and Nathan K for the photos taken. We look forward to hosting the conference again next year, after seeing the passionate turnout of students from DC across year levels engaging in administrative, secretarial, chair and delegate roles.
