DC Hosts Model United Nations

Last weekend, our student-led secretariat consisting of five Year 13s and two Year 12s–Secretary Generals Rysa and Malhar, Deputy Secretary-General Alexander, Head of Finance Mark, Head of Marketing Nathan K, Head of Logistics Horus and Head of Design Jasmine facilitated Discovery College’s third Model United Nations conference, hosting over 200 people.

This event engages students from across Hong Kong in discussions on issues ranging from the ongoing Taliban regime in Afghanistan in the General Assembly to the historical 1979 Nicaraguan Revolution.

We find it essential to remain informed about our geopolitical landscape, with an understanding of jarring global issues being crucial to effectively voicing concerns and contributing to meaningful resolutions. As such, this year’s theme of “Down the Rabbit Hole” served as a metaphor for our journey into the complexities of international relations. Just as Alice navigated a surreal world in Alice in Wonderland, we too must explore the interconnectedness of global challenges, illuminating pressing issues and fostering a deeper awareness of the widespread issues faced by various regions.

DCMUN was honoured to host a key global leader for change, Mr. Eric Stryson, founder of the Global Institute for Tomorrow (GIFT), and Ms. Chloe Pollack, our College Principal, as guest speakers for the event. Whilst Mr. Styrson spoke about technology’s role in supply chains and integral aspects of geopolitics, Ms. Pollack discussed principles such as the Cynefin Framework and the principles behind Aesop’s fable “The Oak and the Reed” and its relevance to global affairs.

We are proud to announce that DC won over 5 awards, ranging from Most Improved to Best Speaker to Best Delegate at the conference against over 12 schools across Hong Kong attending the conference. Congratulations, in particular, to Eric as Best Delegate of the Human Rights Council, Riya and Stephanie as Best Speaker of the General Assembly and Merel and Aleena as Most Improved of the General Assembly. Special thanks go to Mahirr for serving as Deputy Committee Chair of the Human Rights Council and to Ashley, Nathan C and Nathan K for the photos taken. We look forward to hosting the conference again next year, after seeing the passionate turnout of students from DC across year levels engaging in administrative, secretarial, chair and delegate roles.

Celebrating Year 6 Chinese Learning: A Vibrant Showcase

What a wonderful morning of cultural immersion and student achievement!  Today, our Year 6 students hosted their Celebrations of Learning (六年级中文学习成果展), showcasing the impressive progress they have made in their Chinese language journey.

A Morning of Captivating Performances

The event kicked off in the theatre with a series of high-energy performances that left parents and teachers alike beaming with pride:

1st Performance: Zhang Laoshi’s class set a festive mood with a spirited rendition of the classic song "Gongxi Gongxi" (恭喜恭喜) to welcome the Year of the Horse.

2nd Performance: Wang Laoshi’s class brought humor to the stage with a the song  "Sorry, My Chinese is Not Good" (对不起, 我的中文不好).

3rd Performance: Zhao Laoshi’s class touched our hearts with their performance of "Thank You, My Teacher" (感谢我的老师), expressing gratitude for their teachers.

4th Performance: Shu Laoshi’s class demonstrated rhythmic precision with a Kuaiban (Traditional Bamboo Clapper) performance of the poem "Yuan Ri" (元日) by Wang Anshi, celebrating traditional New Year's Day.

Classroom Visits & Hands-on Learning

Following the performances, families moved to the Year 6 Learning Area. Guided by the students themselves, parents had the opportunity to:

  • Explore a Work Showcase of student projects.

  • Engage in hands-on cultural activities designed and led by the students.

  • See firsthand how much their children's Chinese language skills have flourished.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all the parents who joined us and to our dedicated Chinese teaching team — Ms Zhang, Ms Wang, Ms Zhao, Ms Shu and our Chinese EAs (Ms Mandy, Ms  Cici, Ms Audrey and Ms Carrie for making this celebration possible.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Chinese New Year!

Year 4 Celebration of Learning

Last Friday, Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic Celebration of Learning, welcoming parents into the classroom to share their exciting work on body systems. The children confidently showcased their knowledge through a range of hands‑on and creative activities.

Parents were impressed as the children taught them about a specific body system using stop‑motion animation, clearly explaining key ideas and vocabulary. There was also great enthusiasm as the children demonstrated how to make a model of a muscle, helping to show how muscles work and support movement. As part of their learning about the respiratory and circulatory systems, the children measured their heart rate and discussed how exercise affects the body, alongside several other interactive activities.

It was wonderful to see the children so engaged, proud, and articulate as they shared their learning. The afternoon was a great success and a lovely opportunity to celebrate the hard work and progress made by Year 4.

DC U16 boys football are ISSFHK Champions

Discovery College secured the U16 title with a confident 7–1 victory over YMCA in a hard-fought final. Jack  starred with a sensational hat‑trick, combining clinical finishing and intelligent movement in the box.

Discovery College controlled large parts of the game through strong midfield work from Harry, who broke up play, created turnovers, and sparked several swift counterattacks. Noah provided a reliable defensive presence, making important tackles and helping to regain possession.

Goals came from a variety of team efforts and smart transitions. Both teams showed great commitment and sportsmanship — the squad saved one of their best performances of the season for the final.

Congratulations to the whole team, and a special shout-out to Jack for earning Man of the Match!

Primary Inter-school Cross Country Run

We are thrilled to report on the successful Inter-School Cross Country event held at Discovery College yesterday, which brought together primary students for a day filled with excitement and team spirit. The turnout was spectacular, with enthusiastic parents and classmates cheering from the sidelines, creating a wonderful community atmosphere.

Participants competed across six divisions, ranging from Under 8 to Under 11, showcasing the hard work and resilience that our students have demonstrated throughout their training. These qualities truly shone through on race day.

Discovery College finished an impressive second overall in the Under 8 division, which is a remarkable achievement.  We want to extend a special congratulations to Alberto, from Year 5, who achieved an outstanding 1st place in the Under 10 category, and Pratyush, from Year 3, who secured an impressive 3rd place in the Under 8 division. The dedication and determination of all participants was inspiring!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in organising this memorable event, as well as to our dedicated primary cross-country coaches for their efforts.

A special thank you, also, for the members of our community who were able to come along and cheer for the event, including our primary students whose drumming and chanting helped all of our runners to get up the hill with a smile on their faces!

Supporting the Community with Creativity for LNY

This past January, our Primary and Secondary students participated in an ESF wide LNY Card competition. With guidance from the Art Department, Discovery College students designed Red Packets to showcase their artistic talents and foster their cultural appreciation. The response has been incredible, with many beautifully crafted designs submitted by our young artists. In the spirit of giving, our Art Captains have decided to turn this initiative into a fundraising opportunity for two deserving charities:

  • ImpactHK: A local NGO that supports the homeless community in Hong Kong by providing essential services and resources.
  • Love21: A charity supporting individuals with Down syndrome to promote awareness and inclusion (who also helped us raise money for Tai Po at Christmas)

This initiative not only allows students to express their creativity while emphasising the importance of giving back, but it also celebrates our cultural context. Students have been so excited to make art about traditions that many celebrate in Asia.  We encourage all families to allow students to purchase Lai See in the morning and at snack break to support these meaningful causes.

In the past week, we have surpassed our goal of 1000 dollars for ImpactHK!

Please continue to donate to the Art Captain’s next week when we raise funds for Love21! They are selling each morning (8 - 8:15am) and during snack break (9:50 - 10:05am).

Let’s embrace the spirit of generosity this Lunar New Year and make an impact together!

A heartfelt thank you from the Visual Arts Department and the Art Captains.

We are excited to announce that our Book Character Parade has been rescheduled to Monday, 16 March. Originally planned for December, this event was postponed out of respect during the period of mourning following the tragedy of the Tai Po Fire.
